Read /kernel/drv/asy/conf.  It will tell you what to do.  Then reboot with the -r
option.

Can't find 2nd serial port in Solaris x86

Hi:

Has anyone come across this problem before:

I'm running Solaris 2.4 on a Pentium-90 (x86 version, of course) and I
am trying to setup a dial-in/out modem on COM2.

When I check out my /dev directory, there is only one entry 'ttya'.  There
is no ttyb entry.

Also, when I check the /devices
directory there is an entry corresponding to COM1
(ie. using address 3f8) but there is no corresponding entry for COM2
(which uses address 2f8)..

I've tried reconfiguring on bootup (using -r flag) but that didn't seem
to help.

How do I make solaris 'see' my COM2 port?

Thanks in advance.

-donald

Check out the file /kernel/drv/asy.conf. Uncomment the appropriate line and do a
reconfiguration boot.

Best wishes,

1. Solaris x86's fu*&!@ing serial port drivers!!!

You're certainly not the only one who suffers from the serial drivers problem.
I'm frequently using kermit at 19.2 on an old but faithful Telebit 2500,
and I also have occasional lockups, usually after getting some garbage
(maybe phone-line noise). In many cases killing the kermit processes
is all that's required to unwedge the serial line, but sometimes a reboot
is necessary. I'm using standard COM ports, with 16550 chips.

I'm also using term (2.3.5) sometimes, and the lockups occur there as well.

In the past I've used different Unix versions, all having their share of
serial driver problems, so Solaris is certainly not the only one.
But with other Unix versions we could at least use FAS or SAS to get a
solution (free of charge as well).

The only Unix on the PC platform I've ever used that never had any problem
with the serial ports was SCO Xenix on a 286 machine. (That machine was the
only one I've ever known to keep up with incoming 9600 bps on a standard 16450
or even 8250 port, even under heavy load.) This just shows that it's not the
hardware platform that's the problem. It's the software.
