URGENT: E4500 with A1000 disk array

Post by Gino Ranaivoariso » Wed, 16 Jan 2002 03:12:01

Hello,

 I have  to install solaris 2.6 on  E4500 with A1000 (RAID5); I have
some problems to recognize my A1000 array (with 12 disks) . It seems to
be a controller problems but I'm not sure. How can I do to be sure if it
is a hardware problem or a controller problem ?
With OBP I got the results:
OK> probe-scsi-all
Target1
unit0  Device Type 20   Symbios StorageA1000 0205
...(qsi--w)
unit1  Device Type 20   Symbios StorageA1000 0205
...(qsi--w)
unit2   Device Type 20   Symbios StorageA1000 0205
...(qsi--w)
unit3   Device Type 20   Symbios StorageA1000 0205
...(qsi--w)
unit4  Device Type 20   Symbios StorageA1000 0205
...(qsi--w)
unit5  Device Type 20   Symbios StorageA1000 0205
...(qsi--w)
unit6  Device Type 20   Symbios StorageA1000 0205
...(qsi--w)
unit7  Device Type 20   Symbios StorageA1000 0205
...(qsi--w)

With format command, I can handle my  2 internal disks but not my A1000
disk array

Thanks for your help,

Gino,

Have you got Raid Manager installed ( /usr/lib/osa/bin/rm6 ) ?

Gino,

This could be a stupid question, but are you sure there are 12 disks in
your A1K?  Some have only 8.

Format will not show the disks in your A1K, only the LUNs that are
created using RM6.  Have you installed RM6 yet?

Cool, what does RM6 show for your disks in your A1K?  Like I mentioned,
your system will only see the LUNs, not the actual disks...

URGENT: E4500 with A1000 disk array

Post by Gino Ranaivoariso » Mon, 21 Jan 2002 17:19:56

The operation was compromised because GUI rm6 failed :-(; so one colleague went on

site to continue the operation described here (I don't have the results yet)

  Thanks  a lot,

Gino R.

To reset the configuration on an A1000 back to its original state (LUN
0) if the GUI/raidutil commands fail:

1. Power the A1000 down and power system down,

2. Remove all of the drives but the first one (far left)

3. Remove the battery unit from the back

4. Wait at least 60 seconds and put battery back in

5. Power unit on and bring system up

6. Start rm6 then plug drives in one at a time

1. Problems with very slow disks on a SUN A1000 disk-array!

Hello,

I really need help with this one.

We have a SUN E4500 machine (With two 10,000rpms Ultra-SCSI disks)
attached to a SUN A1000 diskarray.

Included in the A1000 is six 10,000rpms Ultra-SCSI disks. (DiskID:
5404521-01)
The problem we are having is that there are very slow
search/read/write times on the disks inside the A1000 box.

The A1000 box is setup in a RAID 5 configuration, and maybe this is
wrong? Is it better to make a stripe (RAID 0) if we are looking for
best speed?

Example:

When we are running a simple cp (copy) command to test the disks, we
get the following results:

Copy the file from E4500 ==> A1000 = 17 seconds.
Copy the file from A1000 ==> E4500 = 17 seconds.
Copy the file from E4500 ==> E4500 = 46 seconds.
Copy the file from A1000 ==> A1000 = 28 seconds.

This tests were made with no other processes running on the machines,
so there is nothing else that is taking performance from the machines
or disks.

Please help me on this one as soon as possible.

Thank you.
