I'm starting to get very confused with Sun's numbering system for their OS
releases.
Can someone describe to me the difference between SunOS 5.6, Solaris 2.6,
Solaris 7 and Solaris 8?
Also, what is the most up-do-date release that is stable?

Solaris 2.6
32 bit solaris
CDE 1.2
--Not a bad os. this is what is installed on most of my computers in
my dept
Solaris 2.7 (aka Solaris 7)
64 bit OR 32 bit solaris (you can choose which install you want)
CDE 1.3
--Newest stable solaris. It does a few windowish things I don't like
but it can be taught to play nice. I have this on about 20%
of my dept's computers
Solaris 2.8
64 bit solaris with new bells and whistles (including some mainframe
conventions)
In beta testing. Not a stable setup yet.
--Looks like a good OS, but I haven't tested it yet. It is due in
production 2nd quarter next year (March or April).

Solaris 2.6 = SunOS 5.6 + CDE + OpenwinQuote:>SunOS5.6 != Solaris 2.6

SunOS5.6 != Solaris 2.6Quote:>SunOS5.6 = Solaris 2.6
There is no such thing as Solaris 2.7. What is called Solaris 7 *should*Quote:>Solaris 2.7 (aka Solaris 7)
There is also no such thing as Solaris 2.8. You must mean Solaris 8 (seeQuote:>Solaris 2.8

1. Benchmarks x86 Solaris vs Linux and Solaris 2.6 x86 vs sparc
It has been requested that someone try some benchmark comparing:
1. Solaris 2.6 on various hardware (sparc vs x86)
2. Different OS's on the same x86 hardware.
I did both: http://www.math.fsu.edu/~bellenot/solaris/benchmark.txt
Your Mileage May Vary, I make no claims that these benchmarks
say anything important other than for amusement.
I did two kinds of tests. A numerical test I have been using
for years. And I timed about a 100 source file debug build.
The numerical tests are available, older results are in
http://www.math.fsu.edu/~bellenot/solaris/bench.txt
