Sendmail 8.7 breaks Solaris 2.4 NIS+

Sendmail 8.7 breaks Solaris 2.4 NIS+

Post by Bueche Charl » Sat, 21 Oct 1995 04:00:00

Hi all,

If the following is verified by other people, it may be a
FAQ entry.

If you run (Solaris 2.4) AND (Sendmail 8.7)

you should have hosts entry in /etc/nsswitch.conf listing
hosts:  files dns nisplus

Else, sendmail will have trouble finding the hostname and
make very long to start up.

Now the problem : this nsswitch setup breaks nismkdir.
Error is : hostname must be fully qualified.

Fully qualified name does not work better.

Workaround :  you have to temporary change the order
of search in nsswitch.conf

8.7.1 only logs an error (I think).

If "hosts: files dns nisplus" returns different hostnames than
"hosts: files nisplus dns" you should ask yourself:
"Why am I not using FQDN in NIS+?"

I'm not sure if NIS+ works that way, since it does funnt stuff with
hostnames and secure RPC.  My personal preference has always been to make
sure the files, nis, nisplus and dns always return the same hostname
values.  Since DNS leaves you no choice but to return FQDNs, that
implies that files, nis and nisplus should have the FQDN as the
perferred name.  (i.e., use "ip FQDN NQDN", not "ip NQDN FQDN")

Have you tried upgrading to sendmail 8.7.1 and putting dns *last* in the
nsswitch.conf line? This fixes the first problem (which was discussed in
comp.mail.sendmail a while back), and I would think it fixes the second
too, but I don't know as I don't use NIS+.
