help needed with rsh

Post by taz » Thu, 09 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Hello People.

I am having a problem rsh from one machine to another. I am writing scripts
that need to rsh from one machine to another, but when they run it is trying
to ask for a password, which causes the script to hault.

I have set up the users on both machines. I have set up the hostnames in the
hosts.equiv and hosts files in /etc. I have set up a .rhosts file in the
users home directory. But it still asks me for a password.

I have set up users in the past, encountering no problems, but I have
encountered this problem twice. Is there anything else I should be keeping
an eye out for...?

Cheers.

do a telnet from one machine to the other and then check with
"who" if the same hostname that you have in hosts.equiv is displayed.

1. Help needed with rsh on Solaris 2.6

Hi all,

I've got a problem getting rsh to work on a Solaris 2.6 machine I built
a little while ago.  I've installed several servers, including ssh on this
box, (Box A), so I'm not sure if any of them are the reason why I can't get
rsh to work properly.

This box has "+" as the only entry in the /etc/hosts.equiv file, and the
password file on this box is the same as on all the other machines I'm
trying to access.

When trying to execute 'rsh other_server pwd', I get the response
'other_server: permission denied'.

Here is the funny part, I built a fresh box (Box B) a few weeks ago,
standard Solaris 2.6, and box B has "+" as the only entry in /etc/hosts.equiv
as well.  Rsh works perfectly on this machine.

Both these machines have identical /etc/hosts.equiv and /etc/inetd.conf files.
The other machines I'm trying to rsh onto are accepting connections from all
hosts.

Any ideas?
