Solaris8 x86 - laptop install problem

Solaris8 x86 - laptop install problem

Post by Jason Coyl » Sun, 13 May 2001 01:03:50

Hi,
I am trying to install solaris 8 on a dell latitude. The cd-rom boots
ok. However when the install procedure asks for the language the
keyboard goes bananas. When I press a key either nothing happens or the
same character appears until the keyboard buffer is full.I have loaded
the latest bios, used an external keyboard, etc but these make no
difference.

Has anybody met and overcome this problem?

Hi Jason,

This is a known problem with the latitudes. There is a bug in the
installation
that prevents you from going further. The way to get around it is using a
USB keyboard for language selection. But I think that you will have to use
the
USB keyboard when you want to use solaris. I am not sure about the last
point,
so maybe someone who has done it can clarify? I think that SUN is working
on
a fix for this, but AFAIK SUN doesn't officially support laptops at all.
I myself have been looking for a laptop to run solaris x86 that has both
audio and
video w/o success. If anybody out there has suggestions, please post them.

HTH,

I run Solaris 8 on a Tosh Satellite 2060CDS without major problems.  I had
to use the xfree X server, though some tosh's do have supported video chips.
The 4Front/opensound audio driver (costs about $30 I think) also works
fine (at least, it did until I installed a driver for an ethernet card, but
I'm sure this could be fixed up easily enough, I just don't have the
incentive to do it).  You could buy a 2nd hand sparcbook!

Hi Paul,

Thanks for replying. How is solaris 8 on the2060CDS in terms of
speed? The cpu is ~300 Mz so it should be ok, but we do a lot of
floating point operations. Are these going to be much slower than
the solaris sparc?
As for sparcbooks, we have an old voyager and that is very slow.
SUN doesn't make portables anymore, you have to buy them from
Tadpole, but they cost $15-$20k, very, very ,steep.

1. Problem installing Solaris8 on x86

I have an IBM-PC server model 8640-CYR with an Mylex DAC960P-2 RAID PCI
controller.  I'm am trying to install Sun Solaris8 for intel on this
machine.
I'm installing using a bootable Solaris floppy and from the cd-rom. All my
hardware is correctly recognized and identified during the start of the
installation
but when 'Solaris Web start' starts I get following error-message: "No disks
that meet the criteria in the Solaris installer documentation found"

Does anybody know this problem? And how can I solve it?

thanks,

Ievel
