Solaris8 over pppoe (DSL connect)

Solaris8 over pppoe (DSL connect)

Post by Gunna » Mon, 10 Sep 2001 19:31:51

I guess the question is posted several times, but I could'nt found an
answer...

Does anzbodz know a (working) HowTo to connect a Solaris (in this case a
SPARC but who cares) to a DSL-Line?

Cheers
Gunnar

Right but useless answer...

Sometimes it makes sense to read the subject.

About two weeks there was a beta sw announce from Sun for pppoe.

Well thx for the response!

DHCP over le0 looks like a dream :-) but in this case I need to dial up
a DSL number (ISP) and connect via DSL/DHCP. Thats the reason for pppoe.

I also know that pppoe should be included in Solaris8 but what I need is
a HowTo to know how to use/handle it...

Thx!
Gunnar

Well this is simple if you really have pppoe running:

You need a username and a passwd.

The passwd is on is what you got.

The username is:

Not that there are no spaces in the user name.

Think real hard about getting one of those "cable/DSL routers" for the home
market - I have seen them as low as $50 at www.tigerdirect.com, to $100 for
a nice Linksys unit. They will mamange the PPPoE connection nicely, and
allow you to simply point your Sun box at it as the gateway, and route as if
you have a regular router between you and your ISP.

Some even have serial-modem backup hardware included, if needed, as well as
a print server...

For $50, I find these boxes to be the best solution, but YMMV...

If you can wait a month, there's an update release of Solaris coming
out with PPPoE support integrated into it.  If not, then drop me a
line and I'll send you the forms you need to fill out in order to get
a beta copy of the software.

1. Connecting to DSL using Linux and rp-pppoe

After several tries, I have finally got it to work; and I would like to
share my
experience to anyone who may be having the same problem and may find
this info
helpful.  Here's what I did:

1.    I downloaded the file rp-pppoe-1.7-1.i386.rpm at Roaring Penguin's
site
        (http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe.html).

2.    I then followed the instructions of the HOW-TO-CONNECT file
        (on this directory: /usr/doc/rp-pppoe-1.7).

And that was it; every time I boot up the computer it starts the
"firewall" and
the "adsl"--I can access the net right after logging in!
Now that's convenience!  :o)

There's an `Installation' instructions on the site.  I followed it, but
it gave
me an error message every time the adsl-setup script:

sed -e expression #1, char 21: Unknown option to 's'
  ** Error modifying /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf
  ** Quitting

The `adsl-setup' may for work for some, and vice versa.  Try running
this script
first before trying step 2.  If it works, kewl; if not, then try step 2.

NOTE:  My computer has RedHat 6.1, and rp-pppoe has only been tested on
6.1, for
now.  To install rp-pppoe on non-RedHat systems, you may need to get the
`source
gzipped tar file' from Roaring Penguin's site.

Again, I hope this info helps.
