An SGI 21" Sony Monitor on a Sun?

An SGI 21" Sony Monitor on a Sun?

Post by Rob Franci » Thu, 26 Mar 1998 04:00:00

I've been trying to get the 21" monitor I've been using
on my Indy for three years to work on my new Ultra 2.

The monitor is labled as model GDM-20D11.  The graphics card
in the Ultra is from a Sparc 5 I had, a TGX I believe.

When I plug the monitor into the Ultra, the monitor never
powers up, just stays dark.

If I then plug in the 17" monitor from a Sparc 5 I have,
it works fine.

I've tried playing with the EPROM settings with:

eeprom output-device=screen:r1024x768x60

and a lot of other resolutions/frequencies, no luck.
It just never powers up.  I do see more pins in the
cable that comes from the Sun monitor.

I was hoping that they are both Sony Trinitrons I'd be
able to exchange them w/o a problem.

Has anyone else tried this?

FYI:  It's a 19" monitor, and was marketed as such by SGI until around
2 years ago, when they decided to call it a 20" monitor.

Speaking of monitors, I just got a new O2, and I'm *not* impressed with
the new Sony 20" monitor they now ship.  The colors are all wrong
(yellow is orange, no matter what you do - try to correct it, and grey
becomes green), it doesn't have a flat front anymore, is at least 3"
deeper, so it won't fit on many desks, the two horisontal lines that
all aperture grill monitors have are *very* noticable, even with dark
colors, and it simply looks and feels cheap.  I thought the old O2
monitor was bad (compared to the *very* good Sony 20" that came with
the Indy), but this is trash.  Probably saves a lot of money for SGI,
but I thought that SGI customers valued graphics excellence?

I have not tried a monitor swap, so the following is pure guesswork:
are you using the 13W3 cable whiuch was on the indy, to connect the
monitor to the Sparc?  The Sun 13W3 pinouts are different to SGI 13W3 --
the sync and monitor ID connections are on different pins.  Perhaps the
monitor simply isn't getting a sync signal to wake it up.

I've used an SGI monitor (RGB) on a Sun with no problems at all
(except finding the 13W3<->RGB cable).  The issue is that the
Sun speaks at a fixed Sync rate (also making the Sun Monitors
mostly useless for anything else, like a PC).  Try breaking
out to 4 cable RGBi and back.

For future expandabilty, I'd recommend multi-sync rather than
vendor's mono-sync monitors.  But it's a pain to get headless
machines from vendors - Alpha's WITH heads were cheaper than
without (exactly the same config otherwise) we ended up giving
away 20 Alpha monitors to clear the halls).  SGI's refusal to
sell Indys and Indigos without monitors and graphics cards
cost them a number of sales, where clients needed simple
servers in racks; it also introduced Suns into otherwise
SGI-only networks.  Nice strategy, Guys.

Sun sells an adaptor for US$95.  We have a couple and find them
invaluable.

This also works well.  We recycle 13W3 cables with a damaged end in
this way.
