Forte Developer 7 Early Access Program

Post by Drew Wre » Sun, 09 Dec 2001 03:21:01

The Forte Developer 7 Early Access Program is designed to
give you an early peek at the next generation of Forte
Developer technology, so you can see how it will work in
your ongoing development.  If you decide to check it out,
your feedback is valuable to a quality software release
and Sun greatly appreciates your input.

The Forte Developer 7 Early Access Program includes:

* A new user interface based on the open source NetBeans
  Tools Platform.
* Significant updates to our C, C++ and Fortran compilers.
* New functionality for our Performance Analyzer.
* New product entitlement based on serial numbers.

This version of Forte Developer software features a new user
interface based on the open source NetBeans Tools Platform,
the same platform powering Sun's Forte for Java product
today.

This is interesting.

http://access1.sun.com/fortedevprod/features.html
says a bit more:

Feature:
New licensing structure based on a serial number model.

Function:
Enables installation and provides runtime entitlement.

Benefit:
Eliminates confusion between node-locked and floating
licenses. Easier license administration.

The FAQ at http://access1.sun.com/fortedevprod/faq.html#question02
says:

The new licensing model is streamlined. As soon as you have entered
your serial number and installed the product, you may begin using
Forte Developer 7 software.

and http://access1.sun.com/fortedevprod/faq.html#question10 says:

RTU stands for Right-To-Use. That is the number of developers who
are entitled to use the product.

Now I am confused. Does this mean:

number of licenses required = total number of users in organisation,

or:

number of licenses required = maximum number of concurrent users?

That's why the web page posted has a 'System Requirements' link for you
to follow.

It'll run on the UltraSparc, but go buy some memory.  The gui won't
run at all (it's in Java).  The compilers will work  b u t  v  e  r  y
   s  l  o  w  l y.

Get more memory.
