NeWSprint under Solaris 2.5 -- jobs don't leave queue

Post by Thomas M. Hund » Fri, 06 Sep 1996 04:00:00

I'm having a problem running NeWSprint (2.5) under Solaris 2.5 on a
SPARCstation LX.  The printer is a NeWSprinter20.  I send a job to
the print queue and it prints, but then stays in the queue.  Further
jobs just sit on the queue, piling up behind the offending one.  Nothing
prints.  Everything looks normal, just nothing happens.

If I 'cancel' the offending job, for a minute or two 'lpstat' will
say everything's normal ("NeWSprinter20 is ready and printing", that
sort of thing) but 'lpq' will say "Warning: NeWSprinter20 is down:
Failed to open the printer port. (Device busy.)"  Then, the blocking
job will disappear, and the next one on the queue will print as usual.
(Then _it_ becomes the blocking job. :-)

Anybody know what the story is?

I've been trying to get patch info from Sun, but without success.
Their web server won't give me the patch report nor serve me
any of the publicly available patches (I was hoping to find
something in the 2.5 cluster.)  v2.5 is the final release of
NeWSprint, so there won't be any help from that direction.

Thanks for any ideas.

-Th

NeWSprint under Solaris 2.5 -- jobs don't leave queue

?I'm having a problem running NeWSprint (2.5) under Solaris 2.5 on a
?SPARCstation LX.  The printer is a NeWSprinter20.  I send a job to
?the print queue and it prints, but then stays in the queue.  Further
?jobs just sit on the queue, piling up behind the offending one.  Nothing
?prints.  Everything looks normal, just nothing happens.

The Solaris FAQ says:

3.12) My jobs stay in the queue after printing.

It's a known bug, and looks fixed in 2.5.
There's also a number of lpsched patches out for
    Solaris: 101025-xx (2.2), 101317-xx (2.3),
    101959-xx (2.4) and 101960-xx (2.4/x86).
    Make sure you install those.

Regardless of what other patches you apply, if you have a printer
connected to your system running Solaris 2.4 or later, and if that
printer uses NeWSprint software, you must apply patch 102113-xx.
This patch is included on the Solaris CD in 2.4 and later
releases.  This patch is also required if you are running Solaris
2.3 with kernel jumbo patch 101318-55 or later.  Note that this is
a NeWSprint patch, not a Solaris patch, and hence it will never be
    integrated into any Solaris release.

"lpstat" on the clients on a regular basis, for some reason
this clears the old files from the queue directories.

1. Solaris 2.5 & NeWSprint 2.5

Hi,

Has anyone had any experience getting NeWSprint 2.5 working with
a SPARCprinter on an SBus card under Solaris 2.5?

I have installed successfully and added the printer.  It seems
to print the first job and then the job remains the queue.  If I
'cancel' the job and try to print again the second job just hangs
and never prints.

I get given this error on both jobs:

%%[ System Error: Unable to map print buffer to disk

Thanks in advance,
