Hi all:

We are currently setting up a NIS+ root master on one of the machine
running S 2.2). I have follow the instructions from the manual and have gotten
the following error instead: (Each entry occurs at different time)

I have follow the instructions from the manual and have gotten the following

Can somebody explain where each of the error coming from. Also, when
I do a "niscat -o org_dir" or for that matter, any objects, it says they don't
exists, but when I look in /var/nis/bach, all these files are there.
I don't mind to start over, but what files I should clear out before
doing so ?
You help and comments is greatly appreciated.

Did you do a /usr/lib/nis/nisupdkeys for every object?
Your problem looks like your NIS+ is settup without des authentication.
If somebody is interested, I can post a full NIS+ server installation routine (that works).

Cheers Patrick

Use the nisserver setup script!!

It takes care of a lot of the ugly details (like running nisupdkeys ).

For more info, see the "NIS+ quickstart" chapter in the Solaris 2.3 Sys Admin answerbook.

If life were that simple...
The scripts nisserver and nisclient are great for blind base
installation, but no good in helping me learning this stupid thing !!!

At the moment my NIS+ instalation is working, but I'm waiting for a
Sun France SE as Sun Portugal was unable to solve our problem with
wierd instabilities (how about 38 megabytes of messages into
/var/adm/messages, witch, unfortunatlly was in the / file system ?).
So far, our moast stable instalation was with Sol 2.2, when we
upgrade to 2.3 things got really strange. I should have seen all the
error messages that NIS+ can produce, including an 'Intruder Alert' in
response to a 'who am i' command...

: For more info, see the "NIS+ quickstart" chapter in the Solaris 2.3 Sys Admin answerbook.

Working on that at the moment, and in SunOS 5.3 Administering NIS+ and
DNS too...

1. Redhat 7.3 NIS errors (Internal NIS error)

Hello.

I am running NIS on a newly installed RedHat 7.3 box. Originally, I
had the box running as a YP slave. The YP master is a Sun box running
Solaris 2.7. About two weeks after I installed 7.3, I occasionally get
these errors in the logs:

Jul 16 23:09:55 butthead amd[26613]: nis_isup: error getting the order
of map amd.raid_home: Internal NIS error
Jul 16 23:09:55 butthead amd[26613]: nis_isup: error getting the order
of map amd.net: Internal NIS error
Jul 16 23:09:55 butthead amd[26613]: nis_isup: error getting the order
of map amd.lab: Internal NIS error

When this happens, users get kicked off and can't login because the
machine is not getting the passwd map from the master. I don't believe
this has anything to do with amd, just that amd is the only thing
complaining. The one time I caught it having this problem, I noticed
that when I did `ypcat passwd`, the passwd file
was coming from another NIS master in the subnet that serves a
different NIS domain. I shutoff ypserv and let it bind to the
ypmaster. Initially, that worked, but the problem surfaced again.
The problem usually clears itself after a short period of time.

I am guessing there is some problem with ypbind. This machine is the
only one in the affected NIS domain that is running Redhat 7.3. None
of the other machines are having any problem. However, I just recently
setup the other NIS master (also Redhat 7.3) serving another NIS
domain, so maybe this is causing some problems. The affected machine
used to run Redhat 6.2, and there were no problems with that setup.

Anyone have any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

Thanks.

Peter.
