Jump Start - questions while booting

Post by Bernd Rekli » Wed, 15 Jun 1994 22:39:46

Hi,
we have problems with jump start.

While the client is booting over jump start, on the client-console
we have to answer 3 questions:

        1) tty-type
        2) timezone
        3) is the client on a network

Has everybody an idea to suppress these questions?

Thanks for an answer.

hmmm, are u using NIS? Well for the timezone put
an entry in /etc/timezone:
timezone hostname

This should be one the server or NIS server

Dont' know.

Add a timehost alias to your NIS map.

Perhaps you need a netmasks map.

This is what happens on headless machines only.  If it happens
on machines, than that's strange.

You'll need to copy the root filesystems (/export/exec/kvm/)
to disk and modify sparc.sun4*.Solaris_2.3/sbin/sysconfig.
You'll need to add:

        TERM=myterm
        export TERM

before invoking sysidnet

Quote:>    2) timezone

Add a timezone NIS map/NIS+ table.

Quote:>    3) is the client on a network

Some careful automated editing of the /etc/.sysIDtool.state file
after bootup can help here too.

(Get ftp.fwi.uva.nl:/pub/solaris/auto-install/*.  In one of the
tar files is an example by John DiMarco that makes auto-install
automatic, even if you don;t run NIS/NIS+).

While our clients are booting over jump start, we have only one
question on the client-console:

whether English, German, French, Italian or Swedish is prefered
for installation.

I always want to have English, so what can I do ? Where does
sysidnet look to find this question ?

Carsten Hennig

Get a non-internationalized version of Solaris 2.x :-)

Define a nis (or nisplus) object called locale an add a line
<domainname>      locale here

example:
gmd.de          us

Autoinstalls bootp is searching if nis or nisplus is running and
resolves the locale from nis (nisplus).

1. Jump Start Question

Is there a better system_type attribute type in a profile file than
"server".  I am installing Solaris 8 over the wire to a E220R and the
install goes fine, but on the first reboot, I get a kernel panic that I
have no time to read.  I am sure that there is a package and driver that
is missing, but there is really no way to tell what.  Is there a way to
push entire distribution?  I can glean it down from there if so.

Thanks in advance.
