hello,
ultra 10 solaris 8 2/02
caiman-root% fbconfig -list
Device-Filename Specific Config Program
--------------- -----------------------
/dev/fbs/ffb0 SUNWffb_config
/dev/fbs/m640 SUNWm64_config

in /etc/dt/config/Xservers

/dev/fbs/ffb0 -defdepth 24

running dtlogin -daemon:
The X-server can not be started on display :0

and in /var/dt/Xerrors:
use: X [:<display>] [option]
-a # mouse acceleration (pixels)
-ac disable access control restri
....
.....

Mon Feb 21 14:46:34 2005
error (pid 337): Server unexpectedly died

Mon Feb 21 14:46:39 2005
error (pid 337): Server for display :0 can't be started.

but if i try to launch a session manually:
# xinit /usr/dt/bin/Xsession

everything works fine!

That's weird. I have the following line in /etc/dt/config/Xservers on my
Ultra 2 with a Creator 3D card, and it works fine:

-defdepth 24

"-dev ... defdepth 24" has been supported in Solaris as far back as I
can find. The "-defdepth 24" form without the "-dev" first was a new
addition in one of the Solaris 9 update releases/patches to allow
specifying a depth for all frame buffers without having to list each one
with the option. Since the poster was on Solaris 8, it won't work
there.
