potential performance impact question

Post by no.s.. » Wed, 27 Apr 2005 00:10:57

Hi All,

I have been told by our Sun representative here in the UK that
implementing more than 20 lp queues on my E20K server will impact its
performance...

Do you know if there any truth in this or is it BS?  I have hunted
around and can not find anything to corroberate this.

Many thanks in advance.

Leon.

depends - as ever! I have an ultra 2 set up as a print server with over
50 print queues configured - printing >1000 jobs a day - this has
negligible impact on the box (it is a dedicated server) - would
recommend having a small cheaper box as a print server as opposed to a
multimillion pound server thats probably got better things to do.
Also are the printers locally attached or network? If locally then
performance impact is greater - if network then you're really only
forwarding the requests.
Kind Regards
Stuart

Hi Stuart,

Thanks for the reply.  I'm with you on the dedicated print server.
Unfortunately this is a temporary fix (aren't they always?!?) until
funding can be made available for a better solution.

I'm pretty new to Sun kit, being an old IBM / HP man myself, and
thought I would ask around for more information.  I didn't want to
question the guys information without, at least, doing some research.
The 20 queue limit seemed to be very small to me, especially as the
printers in question are all on the network (JetDirect cards).

Cheers,
Leon

hmmm....  3000+ queues.  I'm not surprised it barfed.

I guess I was right to suspect a bit of BS.

Hell no. I'd suggest checking with whoever told you that as there's
probably a good chance that wires were getting crossed somwhere as a
comment like that just doesn't make any sense.

BS. I'm running 93 very busy spools on a 360Mhz Ultra 5 of all things.

And it shoves everything through ghostscript filters as well using ifhp,
so it actually does *some* work, but it's still not even nearly causing
the box to sweat.

Dale,  Many thanks for your reply.

Since posting this here, I've done some more research and found that my
initial scepticism was correct.

However, I have also found that the BS is not from Sun, but our own
internal Unix support people.....  politics, politics - don't you just
love it?

Cheers,
Leon.

Sounds to me like your internal Unix support people don't want to
support more than 20 queues :)

1. Sys Accounting and performance impact???

Hello all

I am wondering your thoughts on the performance impact of turning on
system accounting.  We have 10 RS6000s of differing types.

I have used it in the past on other Unix boxes, but there is some
concern with my new employer that the info obtained from sys accounting
will not be worth the performance impact.

We are trying to get a handle on the system utilization figures for the
upper management.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
