SunOS 5.6 & Solaris 2.6 different OS?

Post by Chad Yoshika » Sat, 07 Apr 2001 06:38:21

hi,
can anyone tell me what are the difference between SunOS 5.6 & Solaris
2.6?  are they different OS?  or SunOS only runs on Sun's UltraSparc
and Solaris runs on PC clone?
thanks.

Solaris 2.6 is not an OS, per se.  It's a product name, consisting of SunOS
5.6 (the OS), CDE, and some other stuff.  This is in the Sun FAQs.  Versions
of the components for x86 are labeled as such (SunOS 5.6_x86) if you look at
a patch list, for example.

SunOS 5.6 is the operating system portion of Solaris 2.6 (which also
includes OpenWindows 3.6, CDE 1.2, etc.).
