1. dialing non-SLIP/PPP systems

I have the honor of porting to Linux some really
old code that dials out to systems that do not
talk PPP or SLIP. It wants to use the dial()
system call, but I can't find dial() and all the
references on dialing that I find refer to
PPP/SLIP configurations. Can anyone point me
towards some info on dial() or an alternative?
uucp is no help and cu might be, but is not ideal.

thanks,
chuck
