what's a 'dquot table' and why is it full?

Post by har.. » Thu, 07 Nov 1996 04:00:00

I'm running Solaris 2.5 as a student machine - there are about 5000
student accounts and quotas active on the 4 student partitions.

Every so often I get a slew of
WARNING: dquot table is full
messages on the console.

I'm assuming this has something to do with the quota system, but I
can't find any reference to the dquot table - is this some system
table that needs to be tuned to a larger size in /etc/system?? Is this
really a problem at all? Has anyone seen this before?  Heard any
rumours?

Any help appreciated

Sounds familiar... ;)

Sounds even more familiar

Yes,
you are absolutely correct.
Here's the fix:

In /etc/system, add the line:

set ndquot=10000

Read the man pages on the settings you might need for your machine.
There is also a SRDB on the settings, but I do not
have the number.  I am sure you will have a Sunsolve CD nearby that will
tell you...

We used 10000 as an arbitrary number calculated on the amt of RAM (128MB)
and the number of users (12000).  Our student server is on a SPARC 20...

You would not be hurting anything setting this figure to between 6000-
12000 depending on the RAM you have, and the amt of quota'ing you do...

1. why does 'admintool' hide my 'auto_master' table ?

I _have_ 'auto_home' and 'auto_master' tables on my Solaris2.4/Sparc.
The first one I can access via 'admintool', the second one doesn't show up.
Is this a well known feature I'm not aware of ?
There isn't any difference in file access and I was able to fill
'auto_master' with data (via nispopulate) without any problem.
