Sun FastEthernet 1.0 or 2.0 be...

Post by smcc_u.. » Sat, 08 Jan 2000 04:00:00

Hello,

Got an Ultra 2 that is moving from FDDI
(Sun FDDI 5.0 adapter) to Fast Ethernet.
Can't get the built in hme to work.  No
link light.  Called Sun service and after
talking about it over the phone it was
determined that the internal transciever
is probably bad.  watch-net-all hangs
on the internal transciever check...

Rather than taking the server down for the
better part of a day to have Sun service
replace the motherboard, we decided to
order a Sun Swift adapter.

The genuises in parts and shipping sent
me a fast ethernet card instead with no
paperwork.  Just a box with a card.

It was purchased this week and when I
intalled it the Ultra 2 recognizes it and
assigns the be driver to the card
(leading me to believe they got
a fastethernet 1.0 adapter).

When I plumb it with the be driver it works
fine, except be drivers are half duplex.
We need full-duplex.

The question I have are:

1.  Are there any new be drivers that make this
full-duplex?
2.  I find it hard to believe our supplier would
sell us something as ancient as a fastethernet 1.0
this week.  Is there any chance that the Ultra 2 is
not correctly identifying the card?

TIA

I have some related questions, too:

Does the SunFastEthernet 1.0 (501-2655) use the BEC device?
It's not clear from my 4/16/97 copy of the FEH.  The reason
why I ask is that the be device driver isn't supported on
Solaris 7, and I'm getting some of these SBus cards for my
servers (which are, or will be, running Solaris 7).

Failing that, does the hme driver that comes with Solaris 7
support this card?  (I know it supports the SunFastEthernet 2.0
(501-2919) card).  I've looked in the supported hardware list,
but I find it somewhat confusing, with the different names for
different card (SunFastEthernet 2.0 is called just that, but
there are references to other products that I can't correlate
in my FEH.)  My guess is that the SunFastEthernet 1.0 is also
known as the SunSwift SBus adaptor, in which case, I should
be alright, as further digging seems to imply that the "be" devices
were mainly SCSI/10baseT Ethernet combos...

TIA,

Rich:

I had one of these cards in a SPARCstation 20; it's definitely a "be" device,
which I've also heard isn't supported under Solaris 7.  I was running 2.5.1 at
the time.

I believe the SunFastEthernet 2.0 cards are "hme" devices...

Not that I know of.

Me too.  What's the part number?

I've seen a fe driver? Could this be fast ethernet?
I know the qfe is the quad fast ethernet. Wasn't
the be the precursor to the hme?

What a*off!  Don't I feel like a right*!

Thanks for the reply.  I'll try 'em any way, just in case...  :-/

Something I will bare in mind in future.

Yes, very curious.  Especially since the "be" driver is no
longer by Sun since in Solaris 7.

as far as I know, you can set card parameters with ndd.

ndd -set /dev/hme0 ...

1. Sun Quad FastEthernet 1.0 SQFE/S on Ultra 1

Hello Solarland...
I have a Ultra 1 running Sol 2.5.1, patch-level 103640-06, OpenBoot PROM
3.1
I was trying to install a Sun Quad FastEthernet 1.0 SQFE/S on my Ultra
1, but after a boot -r the card doesn't show up.
ifconfig doesn't see it, and I'm not sure were I can find the latest
drivers for the card.
Any Suggestions...

Thanks
