Sun Ultra 5 internal disk spec, model number?

Sun Ultra 5 internal disk spec, model number?

Post by Michael Wa » Thu, 04 Oct 2001 15:14:59

I would like to buy Sun Ultra 5 internal disk from third party.
The Sun official disk is "ST320420A", but it is IDE/ATA-66 and is
very hard to find now. My questions are:

(1) Will IDE/ATA-100 will work?
(2) Will Solaris 8 on Sun Ultra 5 support 40GB? Higher?
(3) Will any IDE/ATA disk work on Solaris 8? If no, why not?

If you have model numbers that are confirmed to work, please post
or send it to me.

Thanks.

Everyone I tried so far.

So buy one.

If you read the spec, you'd find that the disks are backwards-compatible.

Quote:> (2) Will Solaris 8 on Sun Ultra 5 support 40GB? Higher?

If you check groups.google.com, you'd find that this has been asked hundreds
of times, and that the answer is Solaris 8 will support any
currently-manufactured EIDE hard drive, up to the maximum capacity available.

Quote:> (3) Will any IDE/ATA disk work on Solaris 8? If no, why not?

If you check groups.google.com, you'd find that this has also been asked
hundreds of times and the answer is a resounding "YES."

Close your eyes and point at the disk shelf at your local CompUSA. Open your
eyes and buy the disk you're pointing at :)

1. E250 internal disks: "Sun" disk vs "generic" Seagate disk

"Sun" disk:
5404177-01 (printed on handle, what number this is?)
  Seagate number: ST318404LC

"generic" disk:
  Seagate number: ST318405LC

The format shows:

# format
Searching for disks...done

AVAILABLE DISK SELECTIONS:
       0. c0t0d0 <SUN9.0G cyl 4924 alt 2 hd 27 sec 133>

       1. c0t8d0 <SUN9.0G cyl 4924 alt 2 hd 27 sec 133>

       2. c0t9d0 <SEAGATE-ST318405LC-5063 cyl 18902 alt 2 hd 4 sec 474>

They both work, but with the generic disk, the disk indicator
light inside E250 is not lit. Do you know why and what should
I do (besides buying Sun disks) to make the light lit? The
generic disk is much cheaper (Sun disks cost about $800).

Thanks.
