Lost root pw on 2.5.1

Post by Paul Mos » Thu, 25 Jun 1998 04:00:00

Hello!

A fleeing ex sys admin has changed the root pw and done a runner.  I know, I
know, it shouldn't have happened!  Trouble is it has and how on earth do you
fix it?  Is it a case of booting to singler user mode?  If so, how?

This is probably too dull for the group so any answers by private mail:

Thanks.

I'm sure the group has seen this before, so I'll simplify it.  If you still

Assuming this is a SPARC machine:

1)Locate your Solaris CD.
2)Drop the CD into the CDROM
3)STOP-A, which will halt the machine and drop you to the EEPROM prompt
  (it says "ok")
4)Issue the "boot cdrom" command, and the machine will restart, booting from
  the CDROM.
5)Mount the root partition, go in and edit the shadow file to remove the password
for root, unmount the partition and reboot using normal practices.
6)Root's password will be cleared, thus you can login without one.

You should say "sync; sync" at a shell prompt before the stop-a, and say
"sync" at the ok prompt after the stop-a.  Otherwise, you're relatively
likely to lose data.
