Ignorance -- What's OpenWindows?

Post by Jon LaBad » Sat, 27 Aug 1994 03:08:29

I'm running OpenWindows, Motif 1.2.2, and Solaris 2.3 on an SS2.

What is OpenWindows other than X11R5 with a different directory
structure.  Is anything added, deleted, simply different?

It's definition time:

X11R5: A video server with a well defined protocol and services.

Openwindows: A window manager utilizing some of the features of X11R5 in a
well defined way and adding other services on top of X11R5.

Motif: Another window manager similar to Openwindows but offering different
       additional services and capabilities.

                Does this help?

If you mean OpenWindows 3.3, it's MIT X11R5 pl.20-something, with Display
PostScript extensions and some other proprietary extensions added. But
otherwise it's the same code as MIT X11R5.

Motif is more than just a window manager. It is an X toolkit, similar to
the XView toolkit. The Motif Window Manager is a window manager that makes
use of the Motif Toolkit, must like the OpenLook (Virtual) Window Manager
makes use of the XView Toolkit.

I accept your quibble, but I was using Motif in the same vein as Openwindows
for the purposes of defining at a simplistic level.  Remember, the questioner
does not know (nor probably care) about the semantic difference between
Motif and mwm.

OpenWindows is SunSoft's complete desktop user environment.  It does
include the X server and X libraries from X11R5, as you note.  But it
also includes other components, namely, the XView and OLIT toolkits,
a window manager (olwm), and a suite of applications (the "DeskSet")
consisting of the file manager, mail tool, calendar manager, icon editor,
clock, perfmeter, etc.

Ok, lets get it complete finally:

X11 is a window system. It doesn't specify nor patronize for any special
kind of GUI, whereas it has all means to implement nearly every possible GUI
on it.

OpenWindows is a GUI style specification (style guide), oriented on the
style of old SunView. It comes with a toolkit (XView) and a Windowmanager
(ol[v]wm), which implement the GUI style on top of Xlib.

Motif is another GUI style, specified by OSF contributors and based on
HP's visual appearance and DECs class hierarchy and handling (the Motif
styleguide is quite close to the Xui one ;). It comes with a toolkit,
which implements the GUI on top of Xt and Xlib (as opposed to XView, which
is not Xt based), and mwm, the Windowmanager to implement this GUI style.

1. XTrap (was: Re: Ignorance -- What's OpenWindows?)

I'm interested in using the XTrap extension for X11R5.  Is the XTrap
extension built into OpenWindows 3.3?  If not, could someone lead me
to the source code of the XTrap extension for X11R5?

Also, would you know of some freeware testing tool that takes
advantage of the XTrap extension?  Please lead me to the source code
or the FAQ.

Thank you very much.
