x86: DU7 Video Update problems....

Post by Brendan O'Conno » Wed, 02 Aug 1995 04:00:00

Has anyone installed the DU7 video driver disks?  I've gotten them
off server.berkeley.edu and have had _significant_ problems with the
files. I create the disk images using the dos dd utility and then go to
my Solaris machine to read in the cpio archive .... I follow the
directions in the manual (cpio -iduBI /dev/diskette0) and then zcat the
vdu7image.Z file to cpio -icudB  ......

And then cpio tells me that it found the end of medium on "input" ....
and wants a filename or a device name to continue.

I can uncompress the file with no error.  Parts of the archive get
extracted, but I never get the installdu.sh or (i think) a significant
portion of the distribution files.....

Any suggestions, or does anyone have a similar experience.....

Thanks...
Brendan

I just checked the video update images on server.berkeley.edu and as of
this moment they look identical to what we've posted on the official ftp
and web sites.  I've no idea why your cpio commands got confused.  It's
the first cpio which should have said 'End of medium on "input".', not
the second cpio command which you ran piped from zcat.  What flavor and
release of unix are you using to create the DU video floppies?

I know the answer as I was working on this a few hours ago.

It's a 2 diskette image that's the first problem.  The second
problem is that the second diskette refuses to continue the
cpio.\

Here's how I got around it.

1)  volcheck to introduce the diskette to unix.
2)  dd in the first diskette file. ["if" is whatever eject -d responds with]
      (dd if=/vol/dev/rdiskette0/unlabeled of=vid_1 bs=18k)
3)  eject command and eject the floppy from the drive.
4)  load the second diskette and volcheck to introduce it to unix.
5)  dd in the second diskette file. ["if" is whatever eject -d responds with]
      (dd if=/vol/dev/rdiskette0/unlabeled of=vid_2 bs=18k)
6)  cat the two vid files into a single file.
      (cat vid_1 vid_2 > vid_upd)
7)  cpio in the vid_upd file
(cpio -iduvBI vid_upd)  I like to see the file name.
8)  zcat the resultant file and cpio that in (sorry, I don't have
the name in front of me I'm at home):
      (zcat file.Z | cpio -iduvc
9)  install the patches as usual.

Hope this helps.

1. x86 DU7 Driver update bug?

Anyone managed to get 2.5 du7 to boot from a network
on a Compaq Proliant 800?

This is Compaq's new 800 server, with a Bios date of 11/96,
and it uses a cpq nic network interface. As near as I can tell,
the real mode device driver used to address the NIC is cnfmt.bef.

The problem lies in the fact that the system will begin to boot
from the remote server, but then hangs at the infamous twirling cursor
(after the machine displays the "Booting Kernel/unix" message.

I've applied the DU7 distribution patches to the boot server, and run
the inetboot.sh utility to updated the rpl services.

The system (Proliant 800) has 64megs of RAM, two 4.3gig Barracudas, an
EIDE CD-ROM, and an Archive Python 4mm DAT tape drive. I think the
problem lies in the NIC device driver, because I can install Solaris
from the CD-ROM (which does me no good, as we need to be able to do
custom jumpstarts from a network to this configuration).

Sun? Any clues on this?
