Telnet login message

Post by T. N. Won » Fri, 23 Jul 1999 04:00:00

I recently acquired a Sun Ultrax 60 with Solarix 2.6 installed. The
system gives the message 'SunOS 5.6' before the login prompt 'login:'
for a Telnet session. This is different from the other systems we've got
as they all give messages like :
'UNIX(r) System V Release 4.0 (hostname)' before the login prompt
'login:'

What's the reason? How can I change the login mesage?

Thanks

create /etc/default/telnetd with the line BANNER="your banner message" and
restart inetd

detailed in man in.telnetd

/etc/issue won't let you override the SunOS banner.  You have to change
/etc/default/telnetd and set BANNER="foo"
