Anyone know if there will be a port of Framemaker to the Solaris X86 platform?

Just curious,

Framemaker for x86 Solaris?

: Hi,

: I don't know if they'll port it (actually, at Frame they
: said they had no plans to), but I sure wish they would.

They told us the same. We are interrested because we both have sparcs
and PC running solaris. Since we have no need for MS-Windows, we don't
want Frame on top of MS-Windows.

: Even though Wabi 2.0 works really well, I don't want to use
: Windows programs on an otherwise beautiful desktop; plus,
: with something like PageMaker, zooming in and out and font
: changes are too slow for day-to-day work.  Although, maybe
: the font cache thing needs to dealt with...

: But still, it's an abomination on the OpenWindows desk top!
: Frame should do it.

It is may be too early since 2.4 is not yet widespread, but we may ask
people on the net if they are (seriously) interrested in a solaris PC
port of Frame and send the results to them. After all, if they have the
(2.4) sparc version, they only have to type 'make' to get a x86 version.
Isn't it ? This is not too much to ask and it will bring them money.
Don't they understand that ?

I asked them this question about a year ago and there were no plans.
They seemed to want some customer pull first.  I suggest everyone fire

Framemaker for x86 Solaris?

I would be interested in a port of Frame to Solaris 2.4 x86.

1. Evaluation pointers: x86-Solaris vs x86-NT vs SPARC-Solaris

We are trying to come up with a division-wide standard for workstations
(a mix of engineering applications as well as office-productivity apps).
We realize that we will always need high-end UNIX workstations for
visualization, CFD, CAE, etc....this standard is for the middle-of-the
road requirements.  The choice has boiled down to that specified in
the subject line.

Can anybody point me to web pages, ftp-sites, etc where I can find
info  (honest-to-god evaluations, opinions, reports, benchmark results)
on the above subject?

If you have experiences (maybe opinions as well) please let me know.  This
has the potential of quickly degenerating into a long UNIX-machine vs PC
battle (I'm a long time Sun fan)....BUT I'D LIKE TO FOCUS ON ISSUES LIKE
performance, capability, drawbacks, cost. etc.
