How to use the SUN Sparc 20 on board ISDN hardware

Post by Stephan Kaus » Wed, 15 Jul 1998 04:00:00

Hi all,

I found out that my Sparc 20 has one ISDN controller on board, but no
lines out of the box. If I do cat /dev/isdn I get some chars out of it
so I suspect that there is really one on board.

So I need information of :
How to connect from my mainboard to the ISDN line ?
Is this controller EURO ISDN ?
How to install this device as one network device ?
I like to do RAW HDLC or PPP.

Thanks Stephan

Very easy. Needed Materials:

Some pulse transformers, wire and a prom patcher.

Sold the pulse tranformers to the S0 in/out-put wires of the
BRI chip on the machine, then connect the other side of the
pulse transformer to the outlet of yout NT.

To make it work, you now only have to remove the symbol
"isdn-disabled" from your boot prom ;-)

1. ISDN on Sun Sparc 20 or Ultra 170E?

    Hello,
I currently run PPP (bundled) on my Sparc 20 running Solaris 2.5. I
dial in from home (Sportster/Windows 95) to my office (Courier) and
everything seems to work great.  I will shortly be upgrading to ISDN -
both in my office and at home and I would like to continue my setup
(win95 -> Sparc20 or Ultra1/170E -> internet) as I have now. Question
then is what do I need to get this to work?  Obviously I need to 2
ISDN modems - external (any recommendations?). What software and SBUS
cards do I need in addition to this? Windows 95 seems to handle ISDN
pretty well with the appropriate ISDN software upgrade. What is needed
on the Sun End?

Anyone gone through this process? I'd love to hear about your
experience and set up.

Thanks.
