PREREQUISITE: Programming experience; knowledge of the UNIX process
model; previous experience with multi-processor hardware and/or
parallel programming is desirable but not essential
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This seminar is an intensive one-day examination
of the Threads library, beginning with a consideration of current
limits in computing technology and the development of a case for a new
programming model based on concurrency within the process. The
high-level design aspects of the Threads library are presented as a
background for the main discussion of the development of the API from a
software designers perspective. The features, usage and performance of
the individual functions of the API are presented. The day concludes
with a discussion of advanced topics, including signals, scheduling,
timers and cancellation. This tutorial is designed to be interactive;
student participation is encouraged.
