1. Solaris 2.4 for x86 and SPARC: Similar?
We've got a SPARC 20 running Solaris 2.3 (to be upgraded to 2.4 this
weekend) and a Dell 486/50 running AT&T SVR4. The development
environment the Dell gives us is, er, less than optimal. I'm not
crazy about Solaris 2.4, either, but mainly for "religious" issues.
As a platform for networked apps, it's workable.
So now the higher-ups are thinking about ditching AT&T SVR4 and going
with a different PC-based Unix. I've suggested BSDI, but someone else
has "heard" that Solaris 2.4 for x86 is very fast, very good, very
compatible with Solaris 2.4 for SPARC (though obviously not in a
binary sense).
Can someone who's used Solaris on both SPARC and PC platforms send me
your opinions? If I develop something on, or port something to, the
SPARC, can I transfer it to the x86 with little difficulty, and vice
versa? How does x86 Solaris compare in real and apparent speed with
other PC-based Unices (BSDI, AT&T, and even [ick] SCO)?
All views helpful. Many thanks in advance.
