Hi,
Is it possible to get 1600x1200 resolution with 24-bit
color on a Ultra5 or Ultra10 Sparc workstation?
Thanks,

Yes, both the 5 and 10 have a UPA slot which can take a creator3d or
elite3d card which would provide this resolution. The u5 does not have
easy access to the UPA slot in the case supplied so to use it get
ready to put the mobo in something else. The Sun PGX32 card is a Sun
rebranded TSI Raptor card (w/ the permedia chipset and not the older #9
chipset). And it supposedly supports this resolution although I have
never been able to get it that high with any level of success.

I found all the models at skyblue - but if you want to use 1280x1024 and
85Hz/24Bit with a 21 inch Sun monitor (96kHz) - I cannot make it, even
with a creator 3d. It only works with 76Hz fine. With 85 Hz some lines
are moved to the left or to the right (maybe a 100 lines, it changes
dynamical every 2 to 10 seconds dependig on the mouse movements I make)
- Any hints how it could work with 85Hz fine as well?

Looking at the README for patch 106145 (the creator3d patch for
Solaris 7), bugid 4240890 looks promising:
(from 106145-10)
4240890 setting afb/ffb resolution to 1280x1024x85 on an 21" monitor shows
horizontal lines.
Im on rev. 08, so this might be worth a try.

Monitor possible resolutions: 1024x768x60, 1024x768x70, 1024x768x75,
1152x900x66, 1152x900x76, 1280x1024x67, 1280x1024x76, 960x680x112s,
640x480x60
Current resolution setting: 1280x1024x85
The current ffbconfig for S7 reports:
Monitor possible resolutions: 1024x768x60, 1024x768x70, 1024x768x75,
1024x768x77, 1024x800x84, 1152x900x66, 1152x900x76, 1280x800x76,
1280x1024x60, 1280x1024x67, 1280x1024x76, 1280x1024x85,

1600x1000x76, 1920x1080x72, 1920x1200x70
Current resolution setting: 1280x1024x85
That old ffbconfig claims that my monitor doesn't support those
interesting resolutions; the later version accepts them.

Why should I crawl through cramped Windows
when I can run around freely in UNIX???
Hello everyone,
While we're on this subject.. I too have a Creator3D (rev3) but
the monitor on my Ultra2 is not a SUN Monitor (it's a high-end NEC
22" monitor capable of high-freq resolutions). However, since it's not a
SUN Monitor, ffbconfig thinks it can do much less that this monitor can
actually do:
--- Hardware Configuration for /dev/fbs/ffb0 ---
Type: double-buffered FFB1 with Z-buffer
Board: rev 3 (Speedsort)
PROM Information: Not Available
FBC: version 0x1
DAC: Brooktree 9068, version 4 (Pac1)
3DRAM: Mitsubishi 1308, version 5
EDID Data: Not Available
Monitor Sense ID: 6 (Sun monitor)
Monitor possible resolutions: 1024x768x77, 1024x800x84, 1152x900x66,
1152x900x76, 1280x1024x67, 1280x1024x76, 960x680x112s,
960x680x108s
Current resolution setting: 1152x900x76
So I get 76Hz. Is it possible to lead the Xserver into thinking that my
monitor can do 85Hz (yes it can, up to 1600x1200) or better? Is there a
monitor datafile to add in order to do this?

Does anyone know of a Solaris command that will distinguish
an Ultra 5 from an Ultra 10? /bin/uname -i returns
SUNW,Ultra-5_10 on both platforms. (The sysinfo utility
from MagniComp can do it, but I need to know how to
do it from within Solaris itself).
Thanks for advice.
