install Solaris on SPARC over network

install Solaris on SPARC over network

Post by osman_maz.. » Tue, 07 Sep 1999 04:00:00

I have an ULTRA SPARC 1 with Solaris 7 running on it. Then I have an
ULTRA SPARC 2 running Solaris 5.6 without CDROM. I am trying to
upgrade it to 7 over the network.

I have made the solaris 7 machine as an install server by running
the add_install_client script. When I try to 'boot net' the machine
that I want to upgrade, it detects the install server correctly.
It also starts reading from the other machine's CDROM. But suddenly,
the machine reboots and there is no way for me to find out what
messages come on the screen becos as soon as there is an error,
the machine reboots automatically. I guess I need really keen
eyes to look at the messages.

Anyway, I have tried to run 'boot net -v' also but it also does
not help me debug the problem.

I have also tried to use a SPARC 5 machine and used it as an install
server but it does the same thing.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Osman

Why not view the messages in /var/adm/messages?

1. Solaris 7 network install (Sparc)

I'm attempting to install Solaris 7 from a CD on one Sparc to another
Sparc.  I've followed the "Advanced Installation Guide" right up to the
point where I have to run the add_install_client script. I don't have
NIS, NIS+, or DNS, my network is managed with the files in /etc, and
according to the docs I should be able to perform the installation. Is
that correct?

When I run the add_install_client script. It seems to find the host_name
ok, but not the Ethernet number. The output is:

Error: Ethernet number for devdb not found.

There is an entry for it in /etc/hosts

192.168.1.6 devdb

I just can't figure out how to find, and specify the ethernet number.
Can I do that? If so how?  Do I have to run NIS, NIS+, or a DNS sever to
do a network install?  That seems like a waste if I'm only going to have
3 machines to manage.

I should probably mention that the machine I'm installing on was bought
used and I have no way of getting on it (no root or user passwords) to
configure it or check it's configuration.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
/Mike
