>HI All,

>What about glimpse and harvest??

Ive done a little with glimpse. It seems to work pretty well as advertised,
although I had to adjust it a little to work with perl5 etc.
Dont know how it compares to others since I have not used them.

Best ways of searching web pages - wais, swish etc

Post by Adrian Bate » Sat, 24 Jun 1995 04:00:00

HI All,

Yet again it is me.

Looking through this group and all the web pages it seesm
the following are the ways most people are
indexing and searching web pages from the web. Can people
commnet on the best for solaris 2.4 user.

1. FreeWAIS and wwwwais
2. Swish and wwwwais
3. Freewais-sf and sfgate

Is this true. I am messing about with the first two and
wonder what others think is the best. What about all these
other things which are mentioned like kid-of-wais.pl,
son-of-wais.pl, uncle-twice-removed-wais.pl - are any of
these better than wwwwais??

What about glimpse and harvest??

Anyone bought the commercial waisgate??

And is any of these good for indexing and searching things
other than html files, eg a lot of our users have pc
databases they would like to make searchable on the web.
Ones in dbase and all kinds of things. We are thinking of
having them generate ascii file reports, loading these on
the unix box and then running waisindex on them. But these
users really want the field structure search of their pc
database replicated, ie if it is a community housing
directory for homeless people they want to search on
particluar fields, eg women only, in this area, fee etc.
Can any of the above do this. Is there anything which can
do it?? All help appreciated.

Now back to trying to work out why swish does not index and
why wwwwais is not working with waisq and waissearch.

Please email me as well as board please.

Thanks for all your help

Best ways of searching web pages - wais, swish etc

I can speak for 3.

If you want to have fielded search supported by forms you will have to
take 3. or buy what WAIS Inc. can give you.

Adrian> What about glimpse and harvest??

No real free text search (stemming ...) in glimpse. Harvest is another
subject but roughly the same applies. It's not build for full text
searches.

Adrian> Anyone bought the commercial waisgate??

Comes daily closer to SFgate ;-) Seriously: I did not look for some
time.

freeWAIS-sf and SFgate can fulfill all of you wishes (above ;-).

1. swish / wwwwais / web tree search

I'm trying to build a search on my web server. I used to run swish and
wwwwais on a SparcIPX, which is going in the trashcan.

On the Linux box (linux 2.0.0 & Apache 1.0.5) I have built both swish
and wwwwais.  Swish seems to work OK on the command line, and I have
configured wwwwais.conf to work with swish only.  When I enter a blank
search from the homepage, the correct wwwwais page comes up, when I try
to search using a word, I get a server error, the server error log looks
like this

or afpc-115.tamu.edu, reason: malformed header from script

Has anyone got this to work?  Can anyone make some suggestions.

Thanks,
sid.
