User Log-on Problems (yes, I read the FAQ :)

Post by DHobb » Sat, 23 Jan 1999 04:00:00

Okay, I made a user at home.  The problem of home directories was in the
FAQ that I should have read the first time.  This is not, that I've seen
on any of the FAQs or help pages.

User exists, the system accepts the user name and password, screen goes
white then it kicks me back to the log on screen.  No Welcome screen, no
"Which do you want to use, Openwin or CDE?" prompt, nothing else.
Directory exists, user is legit...???  The only user I can log on as is
root.

Solaris 7 on a SPARC 2.  Brand new install, reformatted et al.

Thanks for any help
Dan

If this happens with only one user, try moving .* in the user's home dir
to
some other place.  Mebbe a fouled-up command in .profile, .*rc, or some
such.

    Speaking only for myself,

1. HELP: EtherExpress16 -or- yeah, yeah, I need a new card :)

If anyone out there has sucessfully got an Intel EtherExpress16 up and running
with their system, I would very much appreciate any clues you could send my
way.  From what I've mnaged to scrounge, it seems the card is a real black
sheep as far as getting it to work under linux goes.  I've tried module
support, I've tried it in the kernel, I've tried fiddling with the route
table, nothing seems to let me talk to the outside world.  When loaded as a
module, the card is recognised and fetches the hardware address OK, so I am
perhaps thinking I need a clue as how to set up the netconfig files?? But in
looking at them, they all seem okay...
I'm running slack96 with kernel 2.0.27 on a PPro200
Thanks in advance!
