color printer COLOR probem: Truly Weird Problem : Help !

Post by Rob Somervill » Sun, 13 Oct 2002 04:39:57

we have a color printer on an Ultra2, as of Oct1,2002 all color print jobs set
from Solaris machines to this printer come out in Black & White. However if we
print to it from A Windoze machine to it, we again get a proper color print !

any body have any ideas what is going on ? It worked before Oct 1 !!!

Rather than hundreds of inappropriate lines of patch info (you are
somewhat behind in revisions of the lp patch, 107115), why not
post the relevant printer configuration?

What is the output of these two commands?

  lpstat  -v printer-name
  lpstat -lp printer-name

Also, what software on the Solaris machines is creating the color
printouts?  What is the make and model printer?  How is the printer
connected - to the Ultra 2's parallel port or serial port?  To the
network?

Not really. Windoze printing and  Unix printing don't have much in
common especially when you are talking about a network printer.  The
windows machines and their apps operate with printer drivers and
usually are outputting PCL5 and unix machines and their apps generally
output text/ascii or Postscript.  The O'Reilly book on Network
Printing has a good overview of the  PPA printing scheme that HP uses,
if you are really interested in a technical reference..

You don't say if the Windows machines are using the Unix machine as a
print server, but I'd guess not.  The PCs either have their own server
to connect to or are setup to print directly to the network printer.

I'd say that the Windows machines are generating the correct jobs and
the Unix apps aren't.  First off, make sure that their isn't something
in the apps that is configured to generate B/W.  Then go into the
/usr/openwin/share/images/PostScript directory and send the picture of
the tiger or the parrot to the printer thru the mars queue.  If it
prints then it's a content type problem, probably that the apps are
generating black and white and not color.

printer service technician set printer default to " fast monchrome " ,
which postscript 2 couldn't override, but postscript 3 could !!

( or so I'm told )
