Solaris 2.4 x86 Boot Driver Update 7 installs and then fails to boot

Post by Hagen Finle » Wed, 08 Nov 1995 04:00:00

In have just received the driver update version 7 and I have been
attempting to install on a Intel 486 120 w 16MB ram using a BusLogic BT-445C
SCSI controller. The update provided the necesary BT-455C driver and the
install went without a hitch. However, when the system rebooted the boot
fails complaining that:

(Cannot load the root filesystem)

I used all the default settings during the install and I installed the
full package, so it seems unlikely that I have misconfigured the install.
One thing that bothers me about this message is that the

that the install used via Drive 0 (A:drive) and my CD drive. If the newly
installed boot path is still looking for the disk in drive 0 then its not
surprizing that it would be hard to find (because its not there). The

Is there a boot flag that allows me to redirect the boot path? If so,
any suggestion where I should direct the boot? Also on my previous UNIX
installs the mounts were specified by /etc/fstab. I am not sure which file I
would need to edit in order to remedy this problem.

That almost always means that you forgot to install the DU Distribution
floppy or that it didn't correctly install.  (If you know how to boot
off the CDROM and mount the root, then check the files
/var/sadm/patch/101936-06/log and /var/sadm/install_data/install_log for
any error messages).  After all the packages were installed (which takes
from 20 minutes to an hour) the install program should have asked you to
insert the the second floppy of the DU release.  When you do that all
the DU patches are read from the floppy and applied to your system.  The
DU patches won't install correctly if you you ignored the message asking
to insert the floppy or if you feed it the wrong or a bad floppy.

floppy doesn't show up in any install messages or screens that I know
of.  Even though the BT-445C board includes a floppy interface, the
blogic driver is *not* used to access the floppy drive.  The blogic
driver is only used to access devices attached to the board's SCSI

be target #0.

If you know how to boot from the CDROM, exit the install program, mount
the root, and apply the patches off of the DU Distribution floppy then
you can avoid redoing the full installation.  If the previous sentence
doesn't make sense to you then you're probably better off redoing the
full installation than trying to get someone to explain all the
necessary steps via email or over the phone (redoing the install takes
less than an hour, learning the above tricks would take just as long and
you could easily blow it and have to do the full install anyways).

Did you remember to apply the so-called "distr" diskettes? Their names are
DU8DIST1.ZIP and DU8DIST2.ZIP (I'm referring to the Driver Update 8 but I
bet it's just the same for 7).
They contain the real patch that updates the drivers of your machine.
The first two boot diskettes (DU8BOOT1.ZIP and DU8BOOT2.ZIP) that you used
contain just a booting kernel for the installation, while the kernel installed
on your hard-disk is copied from the CD-ROM, so it is *not* driver-patched.

Apply the DISTs just as they were a patch (and actually they are), with the
command cpio.

Hope this helps...

Of course, when booted off the cd, precede the above path names with the
mountpoint where you mounted the root.

1. X86 2.4 Driver Update Boot Disks -- How?

I obtained the DU4tar.3 update file (Driver Update #4) from sunsite.  I
have untarred the file, and now I need to know, ho do I go from the
du_boot.3 file to a boot disk?  I tried cpio and it doesn't recognize the
file.  I also need to make the Driver UPdate 4 distribution disk
(du_distribution.3), and know this is a cpio file, but how do I get this
on a floppy?

Any help appreciated, since I can't use my new 2940 until I get this to work.

Thanks,
