filemgr mknod:permisson denied error

filemgr mknod:permisson denied error

Post by Michael Spi » Wed, 08 Feb 1995 06:44:36

I am getting the error message mknod: permission denied when I try to use
filemgr under Solaris 2.3.

The error goes away when I use root.

I have checked all the permissions I can think of (mknod, /tmp, /var and
the rest) and cannot find anything wrong.

Anyone have an idea, or how to get a more verbose error from filemgr?

Thanks in advance.

The solaris FAQ says:

5.2) Why can't I run filemgr, I get ``mknod: permission denied''?

This is a symptom of a bug in filemgr in Solaris 2.3
Either apply patch #101514 or run the following commands
    at system start-up:
             mkdir /tmp/.removable
             chmod a+rwxt /tmp/.removable

Thanks for all the replies. (blush) it was there all the time in the FAQ.
See what 20 hours of code searching and one little grep typo will do to
a SysAdmin ;-)

If you get a copy of the Solaris FAQ there are instructions on how to fix
that problem.  I believe there is also a patch that fixes it as well.

1. mknod: Permission denied error with filemgr

  In Solaris 2.3 (SunOS darkstar 5.3 Generic sun4m sparc) I get :

  % /usr/bin/X11/filemgr
  mknod: Permission denied

Can anyone explain, why does the filemgr need to do a mknod
  anyway ?
