Trying ot compile exim error

I'm trying to compile exim mail transport. After running 'make' the
following errors appear. I've loaded openssh and gcc supplied from
www.sunfreeware.com . I've tried on sparc solaris 2,6 and also 2.8 with
similar results :- I've seem lots of postings similar but no solutions.

/usr/ccs/bin/as: "/var/tmp/ccSxshyf.s", line 4464: error: unknown opcode
".previous"
/usr/ccs/bin/as: "/var/tmp/ccSxshyf.s", line 4464: error: statement syntax
/usr/ccs/bin/as: "/var/tmp/ccSxshyf.s", line 5403: error: unknown opcode
".subsection"
/usr/ccs/bin/as: "/var/tmp/ccSxshyf.s", line 5403: error: statement syntax
/usr/ccs/bin/as: "/var/tmp/ccSxshyf.s", line 5486: error: unknown opcode

Looks like you may have installed a version of gcc compiled for
GNU binutils.

1. Error Trying to compile Linux Kernel 2.4.0

I keep getting this error message when I try to compile the
Kernel. This is at the end, I guess when "make bzImage" is trying to create the
file.

I hope this helps. I really appreciate the help!
