LDAP with unix authentication

Post by b » Thu, 13 Dec 2001 00:54:50

Hi All

I'm tired of going through useless documentation for configuring LDAP
in our solaris environment. can someone point to more meaningful
documentation? Exact steps would be of great help.

LDAP  - iPlanet/Netscape directory server 4.11
LDAP server  - solaris 8
LDAP clients - solaris 7 and solaris 2.6

Again we want to use LDAP for user authentication only for all this
servers. So kindly point to exact steps. Also do i need any other s/w
to meet above requirements? or will iplanet/netscape 4.11 do?

Thanks,
bg

Try http://docs.sun.com/ and search for LDAP, you'll get a guidance for
implementing LDAP auth on solaris.

LDAP with unix authentication

Hi Aryo

I searched Sun website. The only document they have is 'ldap setup and
configuration' which doesn't talk about implementing unix
authentication at all. Also the blueprints documents touch the topic [
5 papers] but none describe the steps. I have seen other postings
crying for LDAP help..

Do u have LDAP running for unix authentication???

This documentation seems to be less verbose that Sun's NIS/NIS+ guides
but it does seem to to address the issues of setting up LDAP as a
naming service for clients and servers (and of course, the naming
service is used for authentication).

Yes, you're right.

I don't use LDAP for authentication but one of the recommended
publications that I keep hearing about is "Solaris[tm] and LDAP Naming
Services" that's available from
http://www.sun.com/blueprints/pubs.html and in many tech book stores.

Also, AFAIK, client-side LDAP support has been integrated into Solaris
in version 8, so you might have to upgrade your older machines.

LDAP with unix authentication

Hi all,

there's nothing about implementing an LDAP server on docs.sun.com,
they only mention how to setup an LDAP client. Nothing really useful
on the blueprint docs.
A technician in Sun Italy suggested me to see the iplanet web site
(www.iplanet.com) to have technical docs.
Other info from him : it's not simple and 'user friendly' to install and
customize , scripts to port nis maps into ldap format don't work correctly,
from solaris 2.6 on it should work, no other software is needed.

I hope this help.
Bye,
Paola

Yes, I'm running Solaris 8, authenticate to iPlanet LDAP 4.12.

Here's the link, it very detail step to follow from creating schema to
executing the command :-)

I'm just curious how to set up iDS4.12 for the purpose of setting for
Solaris8 User login (especially the setting for user's home directory).
I've just finished to install iDS anyway.

1. ldap authentication against IPlanet LDAP server

Howdy all,
I compile my apache server with mod_auth_ldap from
http://www.muquit.com/muquit/software/mod_auth_ldap/mod_auth_ldap.htm...
as static module

i had openldap on the machine when i compiled the apache server.

now i instead of using the openldap, I wanna use the IPlanet LDAP
server for authentication. Will the apache server be able to
authenticate against IPlanet or will I have to recompile the server
again with IPlanet LDAP services?????

Thanks in advance.
