SUN storage U-SCSI disks

SUN storage U-SCSI disks

Hello everyone.

I got a spare Sun storage unit that contains 4 disk. First of all I tried to
understand if it was possible to connect it to a regular Intel PC (WinNT)
with a SCSI interface. It seems possible to do so! Now I got the right cable
and connected it, but I'm not sure how to detect it from WinNT. Do I have to
detect it in the Setup of the PC? What drivers do I need (if any)?

Thanks in advance!

No drivers (other than the SCSI card ones) are needed for this unit
since this is plain SCSI disk box. The SCSI card that you use should
come with some sort of BIOS setup utility that among other things
should detect and list all available SCSI devices.  Consider asking
further questions regarding setup on a windows NT newsgroup. AFAIR, on
windows NT, you should open a volume manager dialog box somewhere,
setup partitions, assign drive letters, and format them before they
can be used.

1. U-DMA 33, U-SCSI or UW-SCSI

Hello,

Question:
What is, at this moment, the best disk interface, to use under Linux.
Is the main advantage of SCSI still the fact that is utilizes the
processor much less then IDE does ? Is this advantage only theoretical
with todays fast systems, or does it make a big difference ?
Looking at throughput speed, the "theoretical" speed of IDE, 33 Mb/s
wins from the U-SCSI, 10 Mb/s ? and UW-SCSI 20 Mb/s ?
The pricing of IDE equipment certainly beats the SCSI stuff.

In other words, is it still a smart thing to stick with SCSI under
Linux, or can I just as well step over to IDE ? And Why ?

thanks in advance

Remco
