SUNOS4.1.3 to Solaris 2.4 upgrade, painful or easy?

SUNOS4.1.3 to Solaris 2.4 upgrade, painful or easy?

Post by Norbert E. Krem » Tue, 25 Jul 1995 04:00:00

We have a Sparcstation LX used as a workstation for
analysis of biological images.  We are now running
SUNOS 4.1.3 and openwin 3

What advantages would we gain by upgrading to Solaris 2.4?

How difficult is it to do this?  How much down-time would
one expect?    Can one have OS4.1.3 and Solaris 2.4
installed on the system at the same time, so that if
there are configuration problems with Solaris, one could
boot up 4.1.3?  Is so, how much hard disk space does this

Finally, when is Solaris 2.5 expected?  Maybe we should
wait a bit longer.

Thanks for all replies,  (I thought this might be a FAQ,
but I cannot find a FAQ for this group.)

1. Ypbind issue NIS(YP), Solaris 2.4 client SunOS4.1.3 slave

We are running Solaris 2.4 w/ many patches.  More times than not when a 2.4
client(NIS) is rebooted the binding process to a 4.1.3 slave can take from
anywhere between 1 minute to several hours, or we bind right a way.  We never
loose the binding once it is established. We are running 100mb/CDDI with a FDDI
backbone. No other symptoms occur once machine is bound. So I tend to believe
it is not a router issue(CISCO). The CDDI cards are Cresendo(CISCO) and the
CDDI hubs are DEC.

Anyone out there seen this?

p.s. if you would like to know which patches send me e-mail and I will forward
them to you.
