checksums of S10 u 2 - what is md5sum.list ?

I'm in the process of downloading Solaris 10 update 2 (CD images for
SPARC). At last I thought - some checksums. But I can't work out the
file format of md5sum.list. I assumed it would be a simple text file,
but clicking it gives a blank page in my browser (Mozilla on SPARC).
Saving at a file I see this:

<!--
   - $Id: Survey.jsp,v 1.9 2006/03/21 13:36:28 sr160425 Exp $$Name:
fbtag_sdlc_vDOT-Q406_20060525-055324 $ SMI

   -->

<!--

   -
   - Copyright (c) 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Sun Microsystems, Inc
   -->

etc etc.

But I can't see any checksums in there.

FWIW, this is the checksum I computed myself. Note that Sun's download
manager has unzipped this, so the checksum is of the iso, not the zipped
iso. Anyone agree/disagree with that, before I write to CD ????

PS

I don't know if half the world is downloading Solaris 10 update 2, but
my connection has slowed a *lot*. I'm now down to 30 kB/s, from 122
kB/s. I only have a domestic ADSL link.

checksums of S10 u 2 - what is md5sum.list ?

That is odd. I don't see that in Mozilla 1.7, which is the browser
supplied with Solaris 10 update 1. All I see is a blank white page. A
simple text file would be nice!!

Looking at md5sum.list I see it contains Javascript.

                <noscript>
                 <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"
width="100%">
                 <tr><td>
                 <b>The Download Center recommends JavaScript for
enhanced functionality.<br>
                 While not required, we recommend enabling it to take
advantage of all the features.<br>
                 </b>
                 </td></tr>
                 <tr><td>&nbsp;</td></tr>
                 </table>
                 </noscript>

But I don't even see the message about reccomending Javascript. (And I'm
99% sure I have that enabled anyway).

One has to wonder if Sun really need to write Javascript to give us a
few checksums. A simple bit of text would be better IMHO.

Thanks for posting those checksums. I might not be the only one who
can't read them from the Sun web site with their browser.

Em, clicking Help->About Web Browser, I see:

     Welcome to Mozilla 1.7 for Sun Java? Desktop System

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; SunOS sun4u; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20051027

But I can't see the Solaris 10 update 2 checksums from that page.

Where did you get Mozilla 1.7.12 from? The 1.7 is I believe supplied
with Solaris 10 update 1. I assume you must have upgraded at some point.

I've just checked and found Javascript is enabled in my browser.

Cheers.

If there is a problem with Mozilla 1.7 then I think it's a bit silly of
Sun putting the checksums on their web page in a format the browser they
supplied with the previous release of the OS can't display. It seems
quite likely someone downloading Solaris 10 update 2 might well be using
the browser included in Solaris 10 update 1.

I still think a text file would have been more sensible for this.

I'll install Mozilla 1.7.13 once I have installed Solaris 10 update 2.
The downloads seem to be going real slooooow for me now. The first CD
came down at around 112 kB/s, but now I'm below 30 KB/s. I was hoping to
start the installation of this tonight, but I think it will wait for
another day (or three) at this rate.

Dave,

thread got me curious.

I surfed to the sparc CD page, and the SPARC md5sum.list file/page is
just a unix-formatted text file.  Both as saved, and when viewing the
page source.

I suspect your browser issue is not inability to read the file format,
but that it is simply taking you to the wrong page - or is trying to
open the "you must click accept" page or something.  Or your
particular mirror/server/whatever is serving up the wrong page.

Just a WAG, (and am I missing the point here? ...)

I don't know what is happening, but I suspect there is some javascript
that converts it to text, but the javascript is not working properly for
me.

I had already accepted the conditions and were in the process of
downloading the zipped iso images.

When I saved as a file (shift, click link, browser then tries to save to
a file), I get the following. Note it is asking me to complete a survey
and say how many SPARC and x86 systems I have. But I'd already been
through that, accepted the conditions and had downloaded at least some
of the zipped iso images.

Clicking the md5sum.list file (no shift, so it should open), it opens as
a blank page for me.

Anyone else got Mozilla 1.7, as distibuted with Solaris 10 update 1? If
so, I'd be interested if they can open the file and display the checksums.

Not running 1.7, but had a similar experience using firefox 1.5.0.2.
I was able to view OK, but having viewed rather than downloaded, I
used "save page" to save.  What was saved was a directory named
md5sums.list, that contained several files.  One contained a
preformatted html list of the checksums.  Sorry for the vagueness,
I'd deleted last night before seeing this thread.

You can only download those files once (a security feature apparently).
Mozilla seems to download it again if you do a "save" or "view source",
and on these subsequent occasions you get a different page. A right
click and save also doesn't work (you seem to get the parent page).
So I think the only way in Mozilla is to display it (which you can only
do once, but you probably didn't know at the time), and then use the X
cut buffer to paste it into an xterm or equivalent for really saving.
Gross...

Auditing, most likely, though it seems a bit silly to do this
for the checksums.

I'll be more attentive when I next try this.  Getting the parent
page may well be consistent with having ended-up with a directory
named md5sums.list.  Another thing to consider might be whether
plugins like flashgot may play a role the the behavior.

And yet, the file with checksums was downloaded albeit not as
a single flat file.  Thanks.

1. APOP and md5sum produce different checksum

The following is captured from rfc1939 regarding the APOP protocol:

         Examples:
             S: +OK POP3 server ready

             C: APOP mrose c4c9334bac560ecc979e58001b3e22fb
             S: +OK maildrop has 1 message (369 octets)

             In this example, the shared  secret  is  the  string
`tan-
             staaf'.  Hence, the MD5 algorithm is applied to the
string

             which produces a digest value of

                c4c9334bac560ecc979e58001b3e22fb

The problem is that when I use the md5sum program to generate the md5
checksum. It gives the value "5e2db0d23f1414918bccbe1e8333cd1f" which
is different from the value above. I have used other tools like
openssl to get the md5 checksum. The result is also
"5e2db0d23f1414918bccbe1e8333cd1f". So, anybody knows how we can get
the value "c4c9334bac560ecc979e58001b3e22fb"?
