HELP: Mounting Iomega Zip (100 MB) DOS Floppy on Solaris 2.5

Post by Bruce Bigb » Tue, 10 Dec 1996 04:00:00

Hi.  I have successfully UFS-formatted an Iomega Zip Disk 100 MB and
exported the filesystem over NFS.  Now, I'm trying to mount a DOS
(Win95)-formatted Zip Disk 100 MB, and, for the life of me, have not
been successful.  I know the file system type is "pcfs", but I have not
been successful using what I thin is the correct command:

mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c0t5d0s0 /mnt

By the way, a  similar command works for a UFS-formatted disk:

mount -F ufs /dev/dsk/c0t5d0s0 /mnt

Does someone know how I can mount a 100 MB Zip Drive DOS file system to
my Sun?

There is a hacked version of 'pcfs', that supports 16Bit Fat's and
fdisk partitions for sparcon:

ftp://ftp.fokus.gmd.de/pub/unix/kernel/pcfs

        mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c0t5d0s2:c /mnt
mounts the primary dos partition

        mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c0t5d0s2:d /mnt
mounts the first sup partition in the extended dos partition.

Hey guys at Sun you basically only need /usr/include/sys/dktp/...
to do the hack. Why is this not part os Solaris (sparc) ?

1. Kernel 2.4.2 and Iomega USB 100 Mb Zip drive

I have recently upgraded my Red hat linux box to version 7.1. I hoped that
the my 100 Mb Iomega USB zip drive was going to work smoothly with it. I
have put the following line in /etc/fstab

/dev/sda4    /mnt/zip    auto    noauto,owner,rw,kudzu 0 0

but mounting /dev/sda4 results in:

mount: /dev/sda4: unknown device

Morevoer, next time teh computer boots, the mount point /mnt/zip disappears
and the line written above is removed from the fstab file. Is this a
behaviour of the kudzu program?

Before trying to install I load the modules usb-storage, which in my
understanding is necessary for using a zip drive.

The Zip drive howto on the Red Hat distribution is very backdated, to the
times when RH 5 was becoming available. What's a good document to read to
make the Usb zip drive work?

Thanks in advance,

Massimo
