weird ethernet problem

Post by charu choudhar » Wed, 07 Jun 2000 04:00:00

we just got a e450 running solaris 7 from another dept where it ran ok
but now for some reason will not connect to the network using the hme0
interface. the cable, hub, files like hosts, hostname.le0, nodename,
netmask, defaultrouter, resolv.conf, nsswitch.conf etc are all ok. when
i try pinging another machine there is no response. tried checking the
interface at the openboot prompt with "watch-net" shows that the
interface is fine. it can ping itself and "ifconfig -a" shows it;s fine.
the netstat -rn shows the right enteries in the destination and gateway
coulmns but zeroes in flags, refcnt and use.

i even put in a sun quad fast ethernet card (drivers are there and the
system sees it, plus hostname.qfe0 and hosts file are proper) to see if
i could get on the network thru the qfe0 interface.same problem! one
thing that i did notice is that with the qfe0 interface the link green
light comes on whereas with the hme0 inteface it was off at the hub
connection. could it be that the hme0 interface on the motherboard is
partially impaired? what puzzles me is why there is no connectivity with
even qfe0.

running out of ideas...any suggestions most appreciated?

thanks in advance,
_bill

Probably the HUB/Switch expects an other MAC Adress on the port you
connected
the maschine and does some sort of intruder detection ?
Perhaps your netwrok admin must (re-)enable the port on the switch/hub.

hope this helps,

weird ethernet problem

When you are Run level 3 do this:

#snoop
and look at the packets. If you see any at all!
1. If you dont see any packets at all then, try this:
   # ifconfig -a up

2.If you see the Ip addresses within your Subnet and nothing else over
a period of time, then it is a default router problem, which can be
confirmed with a:
  #ping <ipaddress-outside-subnet> should return a Destination
unreachable or gateway error. Cant remember it..damn,
3.If you see pakets from other subnets then it may be your DNS problem.
you can confirm that by doing a
  #ping 216.32.74.50
4. At this level, you consider doing a :
  #traceroute 216.32.74.50
and see where the packets are getting terminated.
5. Here consult your hardware support.

You can post here the errors or outputs of 1-4 steps, that will help us.

Hope this helps.
Gopi.

1. weird Ethernet problem with de21143

Hey,

I installed NetBSD 1.3.2 on my Micron XKE laptop with a docking station
with aic-7860 SCSI and de21143 ethernet behind a standard Intel mobile bridge
chip.

The first odd thing I noticed when booting was that the scsi controller and
ethernet controller were assigned the same irq. Could this be because
they're behind the same bride chip ?

After ifconfig and route commands I could see what was going on on the
ethernet but  was unable to ping anything, connect to anything, and
my machine was unreachable. Initially I just got arp requests, later ARP
was resolved, but still no connection.
Anyone have an idea what's going on ?
The 'abnormal interrupt' message would indicate that the irq assignment is the
root of the problems. However, there are no options for irq assignment
in the BIOS :(

Thanks.,
Casey
