If you want to add it as additional disk simply format it with the
format utility. The disks know about their size and tell it the format
utility. I have done it with my Fujitsu disk (not in /etc/format.dat)
with success.
Only if you have a disk with rudimentary SCSI-interface, you can have problems,
but I think only in rare cases.
I had problems, as I tried to install Solaris 2.3 directly on the Fujitsu disk.
Then did the following:
boot from the Solaris 2.3 cdrom
open a new console window with the window-manager and
generate a new format.dat
replace /etc/format.dat with this new version:
mkdir /tmp/root-etc
copy /etc/* to /tmp/root-etc
copy the new format.dat to /tmp/root-etc
loopback-mount of /tmp/root-etc over /etc
then continue the installation in the installation window
and all runs fine.
