Solstice Backup with Sun jukebox on 2.5.1

Post by D. Beaudo » Thu, 10 Oct 1996 04:00:00

Hello,

If anyone has gotten the SparcStorage Library jukebox to utilize
2 tape drives on Solaris 2.5, I'd like to hear from ya! I can't seem
to get the jukebox to recognize tape drive #2. However, both devices
show up when I do an /etc/LGTOuscsi/inquire.

(Btw, can two tape drives backup different save sets from the same client
in parallel?)

TIA,
Dave

I don't have any first hand knowledge of this, but have been told Solstice
backup is only licensed for 1 drive.

Well, it work first time out of the box here.
Enterprise 3000 with SparcStorage Library. Are you sure you have all the
required s/w? You need the Soltice backup Server (or network) package
the Jukebox s/w module (1-16 slots JSM-16) anf the TurboPak.

                hope this helps

True for the license that is included with the Solaris server edition.

The answer for the question is the TurboPak. Only that one allows
the parallel use of more than one tape drive. As for the other question,
Legato Networker aka Solstice Backup does not currently allow backing
up one filesystem to more than one tape drive. If you have separate filesystems
they will be backed up concurrently if you set the options for the client
(default is 4, only available in "details mode") and the server correctly.

If you want to split one filesystem, you can play with a backup script.
I did a Perl script that splits Oracle raw disks out to separate
save commands. (save is the command that runs the client side of the backup.)
Do a "man save" to see what it does.

1. Solstice Backup/Legato Networker problem : need label stored on tape, not jukebox

Hello all,

Maybe it is a basic question, and possibly answered before, but does
anyone know how to read tapelabels stored on the DLT-tape itself when
no barcode label has been put on the tape.

I know from trial by error that in a label operation
( for example: # nsrjb -L -S <slot number> -b "<pool name>" )
when you use a used tape with a new label, it somehow verifies the
label with the label stored on the tape itself ( it returns that label
and asks for an overwrite confirmation )

I don't need to read any other info from the tape, although out of
curiosity any extra information i can get ( from just the tape ) from
the commandline could be interesting:
- Is there a connection with the networker database when the above
command is carried out ?
- Is there any additional info to get from just the media itself

I ask this because some barcode labels in our backup pools are
missing, and i need to verify that these tapes can be recycled or need
to be relabeled with their former barcode label numbers.

The hardware concerned : Sun E420, Storedge L20 jukebox and
Solstice/Legato.

All if indeed any info is appreciated.
