su on Solaris 8

we just rebooted a machine, and now I get this error:

$ su -
Sorry.  Your user ID does not support this functionality.

this is solaris 8. I'm not familar with this error, I've looked in
PAM, it looks like I might have to add the su lines to pam.conf, but I
dont know.

Has anyone ever seen this before? if so, if you could share what you
did to fix it, that would be greatly appreciated.

In older version's of solaris you had to be a member of the wheel
group (I think that's what it was) in order to su to root.  Was this
an upgrade?  That would have been pre-2.6

Just a thought.
