Solaris 2.8: Can LDAP replace NIS+ ?

Post by Roland Main » Tue, 18 Jan 2000 04:00:00

Hi !

----

In http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/ea/directory.html Sun announced
"integrated" LDAP support in Solaris 2.8 complementing YP/NIS+...

Does this mean that this LDAP support can "replace" NIS+ ?
Can the Secure RPC infrastructure (e.g. cred.org_dir) be stored within
LDAP ? What about security (better ?) ?

Bye,
Roland

Can you think of any Unix tool that requires so much to do so little? It
wouldn't be so bad if they had finished it - which now they don't intend
to do.

NIS+ was designed for _very_ large installations (+10000 users), you've to do a
lot for initial setup for such big systems...

But I agree, NIS+ can be a pain of you try to use it in it's whole
functionality. But if you reduce it to the minimum setup (only one master
server, no replicas) it works good and stable (assuming Solaris 2.7). Only
requires some nice scripts for administration...

1. Solaris 2.8: Can LDAP replace NIS+ ?

Hi !

----

[Please don't send me email copies of newsgroup postings. Thx !]

:-)
Does the "native" mean something specific ? Does the current Solaris 2.8
implementation miss something ?

----

How does a login chat between client and LDAP server work without sending
the cleartext password (in this case - using SIMPLE auth.) ?
Will Sun implement a better authentification than this one (near future, far
future, never...) ?

Are there any docs how to "migrate" from NIS+ to LDAP ?

Bye,
Roland
