xconsole - Error Couldn't open console

Post by Rowan Smi » Sat, 16 Dec 1995 04:00:00

Hi, when I try to run xconsole from openwindows I get the error,

Couldn't open console.

I am on a SS20, with Solaris 2.4 and the openwin distribution which comes
with that (can't remember the rev number off hand).

I have tried to chmod 777 /dev/console, but that dosn't help, I'f tried
the -f option to specify the file /dev/console, but that still dosn't work.

Anyone got any ideas?

-Rowan

Yes, in Sol2.x you will have to look at the file /etc/logindevperm, where
any permissions for devices are set during login. Therefore, a chmod on
devices will endure only to the next logout/login, if that device is
managed by /etc/logindevperm. Look in the man page, but I guess that's
the file from where your problem stems.

Good luck!

1. xconsole 'Couldn't open console'

Hi,

I hope somebody can give me a pointer to a how to or something for xconsole.
Trying to start xconsole I invariably get the message ? Couldn't open console
?. This happens also when I try to start it as root (/dev/console is rw for
root only). The DISPLAY variable is set to ':0.0', and all error/printf
messagesd from my programs appear on the console, as I can see when switching
 back with ctrl+alt+F1.

What is it that I haven't understood here ?
 Thanks for your tips .

 Armand
