answerbook: can it be used remotely on an X terminal?

Post by oracle use » Sat, 22 Jul 1995 04:00:00

An earlier note indicates that answerbook requires Display Postscript.  I'm
attempting to use remotely on both on an NCD Xterminal and a Solaris
Workstation.  Would this work?

Answerbook does come up on both remote systems. I see (on the xterm window)
that it has searched and found the appropriate answerbooks.  However, once the
GUI version is on the screen, I get the error message "Answerbook SUNWAB_33_2
is not accessible.  Can't find card catalog."  Is there an environmental
variable that points to the location of the answerbook files?

Once I find the files, will the viewer work remotely?

Thanks!

Dave

Probably wont work. You need the DPS support.  I have heard of a company

and X emulators.  I emailed them on Thurs 20/7 and still have not heard
from them :(

Dave:

Sorry but the above assessment has nothing to do DSP.  All that the Answerbook is telling you
is that you can't find that particular answerbook.  I believe the one you are referencing is
the Solaris 2.4 User AB.  By the way, which "book" (for which product) do you seek?

There is a file in your home directory (.ab_cardcatalog) that points to all respective
answerbooks.  Respond to the dialog with error & you should see a list of answerbooks in the
lower window.  If you don't click on the Mod Library button.  That should give a list of
answerbooks to select from.  You have to check off certain ones that you wish to see.  Select
them & press apply.  That should fill the lower window with the ones you selected.  From
there, double click or search to get to specific pages in the ab.  If you still don't see any
answerbooks, then go to /opt directory.  Execute the following command:
    find . -name 'ab_cardcatalog' -print
each hit is a file that contains the appropriate entry for the .ab_cardcatalog file.  So if you
go back to your home directory & rename (for safety) the .ab_cardcatalog .ab_library files,
then rerun answerbook, it will regenerate those files for you.  If you still get errors, there
is something wrong with the answerbooks.  If you don't see anything, it means there are no
local answerbooks installed on that system.

Good Luck

Has any one had problems with Answerbook on Solaris 2.5 sending its
session back to a sunos 4.1.x client?

1. Q:Using a PC as X terminal off Linux *remotely*???

I do most of my work under NT, but would like to use
a telnet-Linux account to run X apps. I'm upgrading my
internet connection to a 128K line (from 28.8K) soon, and feel
it should be reasonably fast to run most X apps
with this level of bandwidth. There are a number of X servers
out there which supposedly run well under NT, essentially allowing
you to turn your PC into a full-fledged X station.
Has anyone done this? What kind of bandwidth did you have?
Another concern: will my telnet/shell account provider get upset with this-
i.e., is this kind of activity frowned upon by an i.s.p for taking up too
many resources?
Not that this is the purpose, but it'd be pretty nifty to have Visual C++
compiling in a window with a Netscape browser running on the same desktop
in an X window of some sort.
