X-86 Video Problem with Diamond Stealth 64 VRam

X-86 Video Problem with Diamond Stealth 64 VRam

Post by Rick Hatc » Sat, 27 May 1995 04:00:00

Hello

I have installed Solaris X-86 on my system - a 90Mhz Pentium with 32meg's of ram,
1Gig Connor SCSI HD and a Diamond Stealth 64 PCI with 2Mb of VRam and a 17" Mag
Monitor.

After I installed the System I verifed the OpenWindows worked which it did in
640x480 mode.  I then put the system in single user mode and installed the Update 6
Video Driver Patch following the instructions provided, the update log said it
installed successfully with no errors. I then install the 101946-1 system patch.  I
then rebooted the system and when it tried to go into OpenWindows it just hangs.  I
have to telnet in and reboot the system.

On the video reconfigure menu I selected Stealth 64 with 2Meg VRAM with a 17"
multisync 64khz monitor.

I have tried to reconfigure a few times and I found that every time run the
kdmconfig -u and kdmconfig -cf, It messes up SuperBlocks on the drive and I have to
run fsck to fix them.

Does anyone know what could be causing this.  I can't stand running OpenWindows in
640x480 mode.

Thanks

I too have this problem with my Diamond Stealth 64 VRAM (4MB) --

My system otherwise contains :

Pentium/90 PCI (Too lazy to check chipset)
32 MB RAM
1.x Gig SCSI w/Adaptec PCI Controller

Sounds to me like they'll need another video patch ... If it means
anything to you I've tried all the other "similar" video cards with
the same effect (trashed video) -- Running 640x480 is useless.

Not a short term answer to the problem, but a suggestion.
The amount of devices in the PC World and the rate of change is
tremendous and SunSoft is doing it's best to keep up with the changes
and doing a good job at it IMHO through Driver Updates. But, quite
often we know of chipset changes in identically marked products
only when it is too late. This is in spite of our working
closely with as many IHVs as we can.

Whenever any of you encounter such problems, it would be nice if you let the
H/W vendor know of it (even if they are not providing the Solaris driver).
Currently many IHVs think that they can put out a product in the market
if it runs DOS and Windows. If enough people shout at them for breaking
Solaris and other Unix compatibility, they may atleast take the courtesy
of working proactively with SunSoft and you can reduce such problems in
the future.

There are *at least* two versions of the Diamond Stealth 64 VRAM.
I've got a Diamond Stealth 64 VRAM (2 mb) and it has an S3 964.
The newer ones have an S3 968.  There is also a Stealth 64 Video VRAM
card, but I don't know what it has.  I don't think the 968's are
are/were supported in Driver Update 6, but the 964 definitely was.
I'm been running openwin in 1280x1024 (8-bit color) mode and haven't
had any problems.  The same kind of problem is going on with
Linux/XFree86.  The 964 is supported in XFree86 3.1.1, but the 968
isn't supported yet.

It is supported in XFree86 3.1.1u2 and has been available for a while.
