In /etc/nsswitch.conf, remove "nis" from the "aliases" entry.

Not really.  The only thing I can think of is that "files nis" is the
default for aliases (in Solaris 8 anyway) so there's a possibility that
your entry isn't being picked up for some reason.  You're sure that
"grep aliases /etc/nsswitch.conf" returns just the one line as above?

Is there any possibility that you or someone else has rebuilt sendmail?
I seem to recall that some versions of sendmail (older ones) did not
follow what /etc/nsswitch.conf said to do, and may be reading a different
file.  Perhaps you need a newer version of sendmail or need to rebuild
the old one with different options.

1. mail not using NIS aliases map

I've a problem with interaction of mail and NIS (aliases map).
Though everything seems to be well configured, i.e
`ypmatch NAME aliases' returns the right user, say USER, `mail USER'
reports always: Unknown user: USER and the mail is forwarded to MAILER-DAEMON.

ypdaemons are running, /etc/aliases contains the NIS Escape Sequence "+:",
(BTW: When using only "+", as recommended in AIX Documentation, `sendmail -bi'
reports an syntax error in /etc/aliases) NIS maps are propagated and
`sendmail -bi' has been done.

Has anyone an idea of what might be wrong ? Thanks.
