Slow download speed for V.90 PPP link

Post by Shao Ai W » Tue, 10 Nov 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

I'd just upgraded my USR 28.8 modem with a USR V.90 modem for my Solaris
2.6 x86 machine.
Before I plug in this modem to the Solaris machine I'd tested on my NT
box, and I was able to get
over 4Kbyte per second for downloading (and often a littel over 5Kbyte /
second).

The download speed with Solaris is disappointing -- about as fast as the
28.8 modem.  I'd setup
my modem (modem initialization strings) with compression on (&K2),
accept connection
speeds at least 33,330 kbs (&U21),  hardware flow control, and variable
port speed.

I'd appreciated if any pointer for setting up this system for full 56K
speed.   Also, is there a way for
me to find out the actual connection speed (as alway shown in NT) for a
PPP session?

System info:
        Solaris 2.6  5/98 release
Solstic PPP (client mode only.  Note: I have the server license
of the software.)
        USR V.90 56K modem (configured as COM1)   (I have a PS/2 mouse).

Regards,
--Shao Wu.

I'm not very sure about your configuration, but sun's serial lines often
don't suport much more than 48Kbits, and so they certainly are a little bit
slower than the one's form Pc's

try adding
 "" STTY=crtscts

 to the /etc/uucp/Systems line, perhaps.

you also didn't say what baud rate you had put in /etc/uucp/Systems

that's "full50k" speed, in reality. The modem is artificially limited to no
more then 53kbps, and you'll probably never see better than 50kbps.

that's the initial connect speed, I believe. When the modem downtrains, you
don't know about it.

You should be running the serial port at 115200
(but I've never used Solstic PPP, so I've no
idea how you do that). If your software has a
limit of 38400, I have a patch to map two of
the slower speeds to 57600 and 115200 on x86;
see  http://www.cucumber.demon.co.uk/solaris/

However, I warn you in advance that Solaris x86
asy driver has a fault which causes it to wedge
on occasions. The chance of this happening
increases with increasing activity on the machine,
and very significantly increases on multi-
processor machines. When this happens, (sometimes
at least) the port starts spewing out garbage,
and always the next process to open the port
becomes unkillably hung until a reboot.

My serial port is set at 115200 bps.  This speed is set in
        /etc/opt/SUNWconn/ppp/link.conf
I'm not really sure if setting is line speed changes any thing as test
results show  (both 115,200bps and 38,400bps  would download
at low 2Kbyte/second for gzip files).  I have been getting this speed
with USR 28.8 at 38,400bps before upgrading the modem.

However, according to Yahoo's test pages, this V.90 with 115200bps
performs like a "typical 33k" modem.

The modem is setup as (init string in modems  file):
        [usr_v90]
        init  = AT E0Q0V1X1&C1&D2&K1&H1&M4&S1&B1&U21

The machine I'm running is actually a Dual CPU system.  I'll play
with some other modem setup combinations and if I can get  a better
download speed.

Thanks.

I'm using the Solstice PPP package (does not come with Solaris Workstation
but comes with Intranet Server CD).  It does not use UUCP and the
configuration
is so much easier.

I'd try both  38,400 bps and 115,200bps line speeds.  I tried veriable port
speed
as well as fixed port speed, and the results are pretty much the same.  Though

I have not tried DISABLE compression (&K1, &K2  [auto enable/disable, enabled]

yields the same result).

Very true.  But my downloading speed is about half of it.  (about 1.8 to
2.4Kbyte/sec
for non-compressible data files).

The speeds I referred to as the downlaoding speeds of non-compressible data
files
such as  graphics files and gzip'ed files.  The speed I got from NT ranging
from
mid 4.xKbyte/sec to low 5Kbyte/sec.

Thanks.

Check at what speed you are *actually* connecting at. Remember a modem
may, due to line conditions, connect at a lower speed than its rated
capability.  That would be the first factor to determine.

But it obviuosly isn't working, so ditch it, and use the stock asppp :-)

I'll make life easier for you.

step 1: pkginfo | grep ppp

step 2: pkgrm all the stuff with ppp in it

step 3: insert the solaris main cdrom, and pkgadd all the stock ppp packages.

step 4: go try

http://www.bolthole.com/solaris/configppp.sh

and lemme know how the script works for you.

(Although I must confess, I also have seen surprisingly poor speeds with
solaris x86. But at other times, I saw the "full" speeds, so i dunno if that
was just a bad day at my ISP, or a more general problem)

Phil,

Thanks for the tips for removing the PPP package.  ;-)

However,
I'm getting one step closer in running my V.90 modem at full 56K
speed (really 50K).

After played with the modem setup, I'm able to download at about
4.4Kbyte/second on average.   The port speed is still setting at 115kbs,
but the modem is initialized a little differently.  I'll play more with
the modem setup and see whatelse can be done to get a few hundred
more bytes out of  it.

So far, I was able to download the Applix distribution successfully
at 4.3Kbytes/second.  The size of the file is 159260209 bytes
(about 152 Mbytes).

I'll let you guys know this weekend.  May be you should be using PPP
some time later....   ;-)

Thanks,

That's probably all you're going to get, I'd guess. :-(
But please post if you do manage to get more than that!

1. V.90 modem, no V.90 speed

I've got a V.90 modem which works under Linux, but not at V.90 speed (
more like 14.4K, it seems) .   On windows, the same modem connects at
43K-46K. The modem is an external Zoom 56K with V.90 support. I'm
running RedHat 5.1.   The script I use to connect is :

exec /usr/sbin/pppd connect '/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/ppp/chatscript'
-detach crtscts modem defaultroute user root /dev/modem

I've tried putting various speeds at the end of the command, but speeds
over 9600 seem to all generate an "invalid speed" message in the system
log.  Does anyone know what the problem might be?
